M W Elky Posted March 4, 2022 Posted March 4, 2022 I so wanted to build this car when I was 20 ,but had to wait till I could get the parts and decals.I built this from the revell kit. I made the rear wheel well modifications by cutting out the wheel well and moving it forward. Then used the left over piece fill in behind moved wheel well. I cut the back seat out then hogged out the side panels with a dremel, and filled the area in with sheet styrene. I then made a 4 point roll bar from.080 rod.I used longer front and back coil springs from the amt 1962 bel air. From what I can tell the real car used a modified stock suspension. Without ladder bars or front straight axle. So there’s no reason to relocate the front wheel wells.I used the Webber manifold from amt’s 1963 corvette and made injector stacks from aluminum tubing. I think the headers came from the amt pro street 67 chevelle. The paint is testors enamel however I painted the hood about 6 years after the body, and the shade of white is off.i suspect testors changed the formula. The decals are from yesteryear. From southern Motorsport hobbies. The Howard’s wheels came from modelhaus.i know of no kits that had these wheels, and the modelhaus parts are getting tough to find.the slicks and front tires are amt. all and all it came out pretty good and displays well.
papajohn97 Posted March 4, 2022 Posted March 4, 2022 Nice job Mike! You did a great job on moving the rear wheel wells forward on the body, can barely see any remnants of the “surgery”. Also based on color reference photos, you’ve nailed that orange- red color, do you remember what paint you used? The decals came out beautifully and the wheels you used are a perfect match to reference photos. Your post is ”timely” for me, I have two of these Revell stock Z16 kits and am about to start cutting the bodies and chassis to build this same drag car. From what I’ve read, this car had both front and rear wheels shifted approx. 12” forward to maintain the stock wheelbase and so the body was essentially moved rearwards on the stock chassis. References I’ve read have also described this car as very squirrelly to drive particularly due to extreme chassis torquing at launch. Despite the lack of factory backing, this car was very successful in match-racing against the dominating Mopars in ‘65-‘66. Hoping my results come out half as good as your build here. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for posting! The paint is plain old testors competition orange, and testors white enamel straight from the rattle can with gloss coat.i will be posting some more awb 65 chevelle’s on my building the covers series in the upcoming Saturday’s. Thanks for the nice complements, and good luck with your build. mike

Yea the decals are by yesteryear I got mine from southern motors hobbies they also sell on eBay under seller name raceminded. I made the earlier version of the car the decals will also do the second version after it was crashed and rebuilt at a match race with the ramchargers at Detroit drag way. The rebuilt car road on crager ss mags which are easier to find. Thanks for the nice complement. You’ll have to check out another of my altered chevelle’s on my this week’s edition of building the covers. Thanks for looking mike 1
