rickcaps55 Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 Hi Guys i have 2 AMT unpainted promo style cars that had BMF on all the chrome trim how can i remove the BMF so i can paint the body's there both 1960 Pontiac's the cars were from a yard sale i went to about 35 years ago i just never got to them so it's been on for a long time any help would be great.
Oldmopars Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 (edited) If it really is BMF and not chromed plastic, it should peel off. If it has been too long and the adhesive is hardened or the foil won't come off, you can try alcohol. IPA, 90+% would be my choice, or denatured alcohol. They won't damage the plastic. But always try a little on the inside of the body just to be safe. Worst case, BMF is thin, prime over it, sand and paint. Many here put BMF under paint and then rub the paint off after. So, you could just leave it. Edited June 9, 2022 by Oldmopars
StevenGuthmiller Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 If you're having difficulty peeling it off, try some WD-40. It should help remove the adhesive, and it won't damage the paint. Be sure to give it a good washing with warm water and dish detergent afterwards. Steve
Can-Con Posted June 9, 2022 Posted June 9, 2022 (edited) Oven cleaner will take that right off. It seems to actually dissolve the thin foil and since they're unpainted, you don't need to worry about ruining the paint. Edited June 9, 2022 by Can-Con
