Guest JamesDE Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Since I had a couple of these laying around I decided to start working on one of them. After some cutting, this is what I came up with.
george 53 Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 It looks like the old GMC they used in the TV show"Cannon Ball" It was a mid 60's TV show about 2 truckers and their adventures. Lookin good so far, How ya gonna do the hood? Heat form it?

Clay Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I will be watching this one. I want to do one out of a F100. Great start!!!
Guest JamesDE Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Here is the photo for inspiration taken from an old issue of Street Trucks magazine. Using the 421 cu. in. from the AMT competition parts pack. Stripped the chrome and painted the block GM dark blue as well as aluminum for the tranny and oil pan. Hole cut out under the bench seat for engine access. Mock up with the engine sitting between the framerails.
Clay Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Man that thing is looking good. Are you gonna do the salt truck?
Guest JamesDE Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 No, but I got a little surprise for the back.
Aaronw Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I was doing the same thing with a '41 Chevy but the hood has me flamboozeled.
Guest JamesDE Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I was doing the same thing with a '41 Chevy but the hood has me flamboozeled. You gotta cut the hood width wise into three pieces and start from the windshield and piece it back together removing and replacing pieces especially when you make the sides. I'll take pics of what Im doing with this one and go step by step to show you what I mean. Trust me, I went through 3 hoods on a '40 Ford before I got it pretty much down.
Aaronw Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I will definately be watching that. My build was just cruising along until I got to the hood.
Guest JamesDE Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 That is why I am waiting until I have to do the hood. Meanwhile, here is the engine almost finished minus wiring, and the belt/pulley assembly.
Dr. Cranky Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I like the way this is going!!! Good progress, chap. Keep it going.
Clay Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 That is why I am waiting until I have to do the hood. Meanwhile, here is the engine almost finished minus wiring, and the belt/pulley assembly. Well what ever you got planned it wont be a problem for that engine.
horsepoweraddict Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 man this is a great idea I guess I never thought about making coe out of a pickup. I will be watching to see how you do that hood though. I think that would be pretty tricky. excellent work and what a great idea!!!
Guest JamesDE Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Thanks guys for the comments. I cut vent openings in the front of the cab so there will be some more air for that blower to breathe. I am about to wrap the engine up and move on the molding the cab as one piece. I post some pics up later.

I love the COE idea....great job!!!! IMHO lose that ugly blower scoop....I switched to a tri-power on the last 421 I did...
Guest JamesDE Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I love the COE idea....great job!!!! IMHO lose that ugly blower scoop....I switched to a tri-power on the last 421 I did... That looks really sick. I might do something like that instead so it would look more functional.
Guest JamesDE Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 And I just keep messing with this and the ideas keep coming. I found a site with a photo of a quad turbo big block pushing a little over 2,100 horses, so I thought about running a twin turbo setup. This is just the beginnings and really rough. Amazing what you can do with parts from the parts box. So far I used a little styrene rod, some headers that were modified, and a wheel tub from a datsun pickup bed. Here are some pics.
CB Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Wow! That is one cool lookin' setup! Keep up the good GREAT work!
Dr. Cranky Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 It's coming along singing a song!!! Keep it going. We are watching you!!!
Guest JamesDE Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Thanks guys. Well, I am starting the hood. I recieved an email from a friend that contains complete detailed photos on how to do the hood as well as other areas that need to be adressed on building a cabover. I will post an update when I get some time. Right now my full time job is keeping me from doing anything else. LOL
Fletch Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 (edited) Impressive James, I have had a '41 COE in the works for 5 or 6 years now and have made no where near the progress you have. The engine combination looks to be a plumbing nightmare, but cool as hell sitting under that cab. Looking forward to seeing this completed. Edited January 30, 2009 by Fletch
Guest JamesDE Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Thanks bro. I have the feeling that this is going to be one of those projects that lasts for months. LOL. I usually build 2 or 3 days a week.
novadose71 Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 COOL! I really like this. Is that the 50 Chevy kit frame?
