I really like what I see of the truck in this ad, but look as I might, I cannot find other pictures of it online. Anyone know what it is?

Another piece in Collectible Corner that seems like a GREAT idea!

Magnante actually still builds models and has both YouTube and cable TV spots he does on the hobby. Here is one video where he again exhibited his stance idea to good effect:

HRM January 2004 showed the upcoming Factory Five Racing GTM. This was a whole 'nuther level of kit car!

Screenshot_20230108_102240.png.00ca7d1fd57ce89ba1f4bf9886c66d7f.png

FFR is still producing the GTM, and I have seen it at a number of shows. It is spectacular to look at, and has incredible performance abilities. I would LOVE to build this one in scale, but I don't believe a kit exists.

FFR also still makes Cobra and Daytona kits. Over the years, they have also segued to some beautiful hot rod kits (coupe, roadster, and truck), as well as a very interesting car called the "818" which uses a Subaru WRX donor.

I visited the FFR factory about five years ago, and can attest to the impeccable quality of their production. The 818 in particular appeals to me, as it is mid engine and would make a good track car.

And in a totally different direction, the Chrysler ME4-12 concept car. The Chrysler cars of this era definitely showed the influence of Mercedes in the new design language.

Screenshot_20230108_011733.jpg.c052df860e8d0d0f75abda8a39d7b2b4.jpg

This car exists as both 1:18 and 1:24 scale diecasts. I don't believe a 1:25 scale model was ever made.

2004 was another watershed year for the hot rod industry, as the old guard was being replaced by the young guns. Perhaps nowhere was this transition more visible than the two hot rod shows which appeared on cable that year. The old-timer Boyd Coddington's show "American Hot Rod" debuted in January, with Chip Foose's "Overhaulin" following suit in April. While HRM stayed out of this topic till their November 2004 issue, they did showcase Foose's '34 Mercury coupe known as "The Stallion", winner of the 2003 Ridler Award in July.

Balsa wood scale model kits? Very interesting blast from the past. HRM February 2004

"Trim excess balsa away as needed" aka "Remove everything that doesn't look like a Chrysler D'elegance"

That would be a nice one to have in styrene, though.

Now I'm totally looking for a scale model of this stunner!

So, if you're HRM and you've mounted a campaign to have a new Chevelle built by GM to your specs - and they totally ignore you, then you go to Aloha Motors and tell them to build it on the GTO underpinnings and call it the Hot Rod Magazine 40th anniversary Chevelle HRSS 454. I don't believe this car became a big success, but the look was pretty neat!

This little spot in HRM March 2005 gave me an answer to a question that had been on my mind; did Troy Trepanier ever do a TV show?

Screenshot_20230109_051240.png.9496bbe70177aa85b4c239a869af5a34.png

As it turns out, not only did he do "Rad Rides by Troy" (or "Rides" as it is colloquially known), but his show predated Coddington and Foose. His shop is still in full vigor today, and seems to be putting out some beautiful cars.

What happens when you take a Dodge Viper and give it the design cues of a Chrysler Crossfire? You get the Chrysler Firepower!

Stunning looking GT car

2005-Chrysler-Firepower-Con.jpg.c98c8356394fc2e4b2ad1e78c4add192.jpg

As far as I know, it was only reproduced as a 1:43 scale model by Norev, and a 1:64 scale diecast by Hot Wheels.

BTW; the article on the Chrysler Firepower refers to it resembling the Ford GR-1, but I have to respectfully disagree. It too is a beautiful car, but had the proportions and heredity of a totally different inspiration (The Shelby Daytona Coupe)

Seems to me, the Firepower, the GR-1, and the Daytona Coupe all deserve to be done in scale :)

HRM May 2005 had a wonderful article on the Bonneville Speed Records holder known as "Goldenrod". Since the topic was the rebuilding of said vehicle, there were lots of photos of the guts of the machine. I've squirrelled these away so in the event I decide to build this icon, I will have some reference material.

HRM had by now taken to using the term "rat rod" quite liberally, and was covering car shows devoted to this genre. Here, they showed a 5 window with twin Chevy motors. I was fairly ambivalent about the car, but did like the setup of the engines...

it looks more like a corvette/ferrari lovechild than a viper to me. pity it didn't make it into production
