Slotto Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 As seen in the mock up thread Based on ride height and steering, the chassis is roughly where I want it. stay tuned... 1
Tarkmucker Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Are you chopping the roof or making a convertible? Either way it looks good so far. Keep it coming 1
Slotto Posted December 6, 2022 Author Posted December 6, 2022 This was my nephew's car many moons ago. Back then he had many wild ideas. The light blue paint with purple shag carpet. He also cut a gaping hold in the hood so something could stick out. Dont know what that was all about. He also had a big shifter glued to the passenger side door card. Wow! I got a little overzealous with my cuts and took off more than I wanted. So now, the shifter is gone, the carpet has been removed and my patch panel is in place. The last time I was at my local hobby shop, the owner suggested using Plastic Putty by Vallejo. This isn't too bad. It's real creamy. So much, I broke out an old build that had a monster cave in after my 1st chop top. kinda curious how much more work will be left to done on the Merc Stay Tuned... 1
stitchdup Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 The stance looks sweet. Will you be painting it 2 tone as it looks kinds cool 1
Slotto Posted December 6, 2022 Author Posted December 6, 2022 I'm undecided on the color. My first thought was a metallic burnt orange with a light brown interior. My second thought was a metallic dark blue with a light brown interior. Either way with matching fenders.
Slotto Posted December 17, 2022 Author Posted December 17, 2022 Doing body work is not one of my favorite things to do. This is what stalls most of my projects that need it. One thing that was desperately needed was to remove the mold seams. This wasn't too bad so I went after all 4 fenders. I went on the web and researched some convertibles. This one caught my eye. I tried to replicate how the top was cut I also tried to clean up my cut lines where the interior meets the body and also continued the contour as to drape the body over the bucket and sanded the filler at the patch. Then I deepened the trunk line with a scriber. Not quite sure where this will take me. I gotta figure out what's gonna happen with the interior. My nephew had high back bucket racing seats glued down. Not using them. I'll dig thru the junkyard to see what's there. 2
KWT Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 Dang Steve... body work is looking good. Pretty spot on with that picture 1
customline Posted December 21, 2022 Posted December 21, 2022 I see pink! If that's Bondo, how do you like it? Looks great, Steve. 1
Slotto Posted December 28, 2022 Author Posted December 28, 2022 I really liked the pale yellow color on that rusty example above so that's what I'm going with. Its Light Yellow by Craft Smart mixed 2:1 with IPA 70 shot at 15psi. Tomorrow I'll hit it with a matte clear coat. 1
customline Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 I like where I think you're going with this. I'm curious about the paint. Is it acrylic craft paint? Not familiar with that stuff. 1
Slotto Posted December 29, 2022 Author Posted December 29, 2022 Yep its acrylic. It's pretty easy to work with and easy to mix. I like it because I can use it indoors without stinking up the house.

Slotto Posted January 1, 2023 Author Posted January 1, 2023 I went out to the junkyard and found the flathead that went in the -40 Ford pickup. A quick splash of paint and it's almost ready to go. Gonna wire this one up for spark and fuel. No heat. Also found a drive shaft that'll do as well as a radiator. I detailed up the fenders up a bit by adding the bright work. I'm surprised I had these pieces. Of course the lenses were askew. I had to fix that. 1
KWT Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 This is looking pretty slick. I forgot to ask, is this the AMT kit? 1
Slotto Posted January 2, 2023 Author Posted January 2, 2023 I'm not sure but by looking at how it goes together with the bucket type interior it appears to be AMT. There are no markings.
dino246gt Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 Coming together nicely! I like what you're doing! 1
customline Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 Happy to see a flatty taking up residence between the fenders! Three 97s too! The thing with the flathead, though, is the distributor. This is usually trouble for me depending on the year of the car it came from. 1
Slotto Posted January 3, 2023 Author Posted January 3, 2023 Fabbed up some disc brakes from flat washers and scrap plastic bits Flathead detailed up with plug wires, custom distributor, coil and fuel line fabricated a differential and aluminum tube drive shaft and installed the power plant. Next for the chassis will be rear shocks, radiator hoses and exhaust. Ill most likely employ the 10 gauge wire for that. Sometimes junkyard builds can be fun.
Slotto Posted January 3, 2023 Author Posted January 3, 2023 I didnt have the taillight assembly so I had to make them. They look good from 5 feet away. They will do until I can find a set. Started work on the exhaust. Glasspacks in the lower picture. Its styrene tube just bigger than the 10 guage wire. I am really enjoying this car.
Slotto Posted January 4, 2023 Author Posted January 4, 2023 Thanks Jeremy. exhaust. Check. radiator hoses. Check. It's been a busy day
