stavanzer Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Looking at the Birthday Roster today. Of the 12 Members listed, only Lancer, has posted within the last 90 days. (He posted in October) The other 11 have not posted here in years. One last visited in 2021. Three of them have not visited since 2009/2010. Seems we have a lot of Ghost Members, who signed up, posted a few times, and then vanished. They do not even qualify as "Lurkers" since the board software detects even a visit, even if you don't post. I find it interesting that people act this way. I am not judging or condemning. Seems like some people just drop into a hobby, and then lose interest and drop back out of it. There are of course the folks who pass, (as can be seen in the Fellow who had his 107th Birthday a few months ago., but the rest... "Hit'n'Run Members", who either got the information they were looking for, or lost interest, for whatever reason. Lastly, to judge by the numbers of New Members who tell us that the have been away from the hobby for years, but are moving back in after Retiring, or otherwise slowing their lives down, we will see steady growth. 2
Dragline Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 I was away for nearly 2 years. I went down a rabbit hole of miniatures and that entire culture of using acrylics and all that entails. But I would come by here on occasion and look in on what was happening. I was signed out when I looked. But then the bug hit me again and here I am. 1

My life took many turns, I had gotten into this near the end of my previous marriage, honestly because it reminded me of my father who passed young. I left almost 12 years ago because I had to get rid of everything in a move... life continued, things settled a bit and I returned. Starting from nothing and my wife, who saw me give everything away for the move and no finished models said I had to finish them this time, just not "collect". I sure miss my parts stash, but there you have it. When I left before, everyone bemoaned the death of model building but I see a Renaissance now, especially with 3d printing. The only thing I see as detrimental, is not having a 10 year collection, rebuilding parts for even a couple models (I can't seem to do stock builds...) is expensive! 1
TonyK Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 In the past, I have signed up on a model or racing message board only to find it became dead. I'd visit every now and then and there'd be no activity. Obviously that's not the case here but it is a strange situation you bring up. Makes you wonder what happened to these people.
iamsuperdan Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 There are a number of boards I've signed up to over the years that for one reason or another were not for me. Sometimes I was looking for one specific answer, and either found it or didn't. Or the board was just dead. Or there was too much drama. Some of the boards for Chev/GMC trucks and Ford trucks are like that. A little too much redneck attitude for my tastes. In any case, I just stopped visiting. There are a lot of people who sign up and use fakes birthdays, so I wouldn't put any stock into that 107 year old guy being legit.
stavanzer Posted December 17, 2022 Author Posted December 17, 2022 Today is Albert Wallace's Birthday. I miss him. Met him once at a Model Contest in Simi Valley. What a Great Modeler. He took wonderful Photos, too.

Met him on the Hobby Heaven Board, then met in person several years ago at a Southern AZ swap meet, saw him multiple times over the years at Desert Scale Classic and the event in Carlsbad CA. GREAT guy; full of stories; knew everyone and everyone knew him! But the Hands-down BEST endorsement ever of Albert: my dog Kodi LOVED HIM!! ?

Lol...now I'm starting to click on the birthday names. Man, you're spot on! 1
Can-Con Posted December 18, 2022 Posted December 18, 2022 For a while there, this board got downright toxic. I even quit for a year after getting into a curfuffel with another member and a moderator. My avatar says I've been here only since 2014 but I was actually one of the first 100 to join when the site started, by invite no less.
