Paul Payne Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 This project has been dug out and put back so many times it's a wonder the box isn't worn out! It began as a very ambitious project with opening doors, rear cowl, and trunk. Given the complex contours of the doors, this was way beyond my skills at the time- it was simply impossible to get the door edges and openings to align and look good, so I decided to scrap the idea, glue the door panels in place, and fill them in. Recently I acquired some superchargers from Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland which were included in the 63 Ford pickup. This eliminated the need for trying (unsuccessfully) to fabricate one myself. A few days before New Years I dug it out and determined to finish it mainly as a styling exercise- which was the original intent! The original engine was a strange v-12 (Duesenberg never made a v-12) so a Monogram engine will be transplanted. Tires from a 1/32nd scale big rig were just right! The windshields were from a Testor's release of the 48 Ford. The new front fenders are from the parts box. Let's see what happens! 1
Paul Payne Posted January 2, 2023 Author Posted January 2, 2023 At this point, it's sort of like restoring a junker. Didn't have a clear plan when it was started, but I'm much better now!
Joe Nunes Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 Have not seen this model for a long time. It would be a unique build. Joe
Paul Payne Posted January 4, 2023 Author Posted January 4, 2023 (edited) Mock up of the possible exhaust system. Will probably need to be shortened and otherwise adjusted! Edited January 4, 2023 by Paul Payne
Paul Payne Posted January 18, 2023 Author Posted January 18, 2023 Well, I have been busy with the Duesey- repainted the engine, added the induction system and exhausts (the exhausts will need a little more work), wired it, and fitted mounting brackets on the chassis. The body is finally one color after 35 years- decided to go with Testors flat red instead of my usual flat black- still needs a lot of sanding- maybe another coat and then wet sanding. he final body color will be deep red, and the interior will get a shot of dullcoat to look like leather. The front chassis/belly pan still need paint. Had to repair some cracks caused by flexing during trial fitting. Also trial fit the front wheels for the first time ever- they need to be raised a bit to lower the front end. Also managed to get some paint on some interior pieces, as well as fabricating the beginnings of a bar in the back of the front seat- bottles courtesy of the gangbusters series. Does anyone have miniature liquor bottle labels? It would be fun to add them, but they really wouldn't be seen............
Scott Colmer Posted January 29, 2023 Posted January 29, 2023 Bringing this back up. Keep going, Paul. Great subject. Love the blower. Scott
Paul Payne Posted January 29, 2023 Author Posted January 29, 2023 Still working on it, had a paint snafu so into the Easy-off- hope it won't eat all the putty work! Went to a black primer because the red didn't work out, but the paint didn't like this stuff (Rustoleum). Got the exhaust sorted out, also working on the interior.
Paul Payne Posted January 30, 2023 Author Posted January 30, 2023 Well, the Easy-off bath removed most of the paint, and also loosed some parts- the rear cowl and windscreen will have to reinstalled with better support, and the grille surround pretty much came apart so will have to be rebuilt. The engine with the exhaust sorted out fits well in the chassis. The interior is coming along- the bar in the back with auxiliary gauge panel are looking good- inspired by the Burk's Law Rolls with the bar in the back! Once the body dries out I will remove the last of the paint, do some rebuilding, and then some putty work- a chance to do things better!
