How did Lindberg pull this off?

Saw this on ebay today and it reminded me of when these first came out

If memory serves, they also cobbed AMT's Chevy van for their "Hopper" lineup.

Both (there may be others) seem like incredible knock-offs of AMT kits.  How did they do that (legally and in plastic)?

Clone kits and parts have been common sine the 50's.  Current MCM Dace Darby talks about Lindberg parts that are copies of AMT.....in the 1950's!

Yes, it makes the link look short, but all the tracking code is still embedded in it (and tracking your usage).  I don't like that.
