dryvr12 Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 This is also my first picture post (fun to say 10x fast). Find some good pictures of French curves, and cut out. Find some material to cut curve into (I used a butter lid) And there are your curves! Once finished, sand down edges and start paintin'
VW Dave Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Possible dumb question, but here goes....what are 'French curves?'
Ramcharger Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I think the Politically Correct term is "Freedom Curves"
Olle F Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Possible dumb question, but here goes....what are 'French curves?' This is a family oriented forum so I can't tell you... Seriously, it's a template you use to draw different curves: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_curve
Paul Payne Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 French curves were developed by Thomas E. French, Professor of Engineering Drawing at Ohio State University.
Zoom Zoom Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 They're pretty easy to find and pretty inexpensive to purchase without needing to make them yourself. Craft stores, art supply stores, Office Depot/Staples/Office Max should all have them.
Harry P. Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Also, if you try and make them yourself (and why you would want to do that, I have no idea), your chances of cutting the free-flowing curves smoothly, without interruptions in the curves as the radius changes, are practically zero. Here's a set of 4 at amazon for $4. Heck of a lot easier than DIY! http://www.amazon.com/C-Thru-French-Curve-Set/dp/B001CE7BEG
Harry P. Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Nice tip bro I like it and think I may use it on one of my upcoming builds. And Harry ( or should I call ya Barney ), remember $4 saved on a curve template is $4 more we can spend at the LHS. Yeah, but you still hafta buy the butter...
Harry P. Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 butter's like two bucks tops which still leaves me 2 extra bucks for the LHS You may beat me each week on ROM but I gots ya on this one bro You could buy a cow, build a barn for the cow, feed the cow, milk the cow, then churn your own butter. But sometimes it just makes more sense to buy the butter at the store... know what I mean?
Harry P. Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Why buy the cow when ya can get the milk fer free???? sorry couldnt resist that one I'm with ya on that ONE!
dryvr12 Posted February 22, 2009 Author Posted February 22, 2009 btw, i just went to hobby lobby. boughta 4 pack for what would b $8 but used 40% off coupon. That is french curves, not butter lids.
GOTH KUSTOMS Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 No matter how you look at it thanks for the tip, I can cut some out, and OH by the way I can even cut them to the scale I need, thank you....
dryvr12 Posted February 23, 2009 Author Posted February 23, 2009 ya, its not to scale AT ALL. These things are HUGE! The biggest is about 9-10 inches long.
