TheCamaroKid Posted April 18, 2023 Posted April 18, 2023 I have a 66 GTO model kit that I have painted in pearl white. Can I apply the waterslide decals to the paint or should I apply a gloss coat first, then waterslide then clear with the pearl clear?
bluenote Posted April 18, 2023 Posted April 18, 2023 I don't think you'd want to apply pearl clear after the decals, then it would show pearl on the decals which I think would not look right. I would suggest applying decals on the pearl white, then decals, then normal clear to seal everything in.

peteski Posted April 18, 2023 Posted April 18, 2023 Decals should be applied to a smooth (glossy) surface. Is the pearl paint's surface smooth, or is it satin (like typical metallic base paint which needs a top coat clear to make it glossy). Also some decals can be affected by "hot" clear lacquers applied over them. what brand/type of paints (pearl/clear) are you using?

Ive done quite a few NASCARS(though all gloss) nad had no problem with clear over decals.
ctruss53 Posted April 19, 2023 Posted April 19, 2023 You can put decals on any painted surface. HOWEVER if the paint is flat or semi-gloss, you will have a little more trouble, and you will see the edges of the decals easier. As long as your paint is glossy, it should be fine.
TheCamaroKid Posted April 19, 2023 Author Posted April 19, 2023 Cleared it today. I did Tamiya Pearl Clear over the paint and decals. All good. Not perfect, not a show winner but good enough for a slot car drag car that will get covered in finish line glue. 1
