45calibermodel Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Okay so I have built many models but I have always been more of a build it by the instructions with what it came with and dont take my time kind of guy. Now I'm going to step out of the box and try my hand at a full custom job. I have been looking at this site for months and think I have finally seen enough to give this a shot. Thanks to the tips and tricks section I have been posting in "I'm sure I will be posting there again " I'm finally starting. Here is what I got so far. I used step flashing from the hardware store and scrap book paper for templates I molded the edges and mocked up the cage This is what I got so far I'll keep it updated and please give me your imput, this is my first full custom.
horsepoweraddict Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 great start and an excellent idea with the flashing. the interior is awesome so far. I built one these at one time but couldn't stand to look at the thing so I tore it apart and used it for parts.

But you got the right idea on the interior!! Yeah he does have a pretty bad one on there. Don't think mine will turn out like that but I'm gonna try, and yeah I've already found out about the kit. What its missing in parts it makes up for in parts that dont belong in the kit lol. As for the paint, it will be red and black but still going to prime it first.
45calibermodel Posted February 20, 2009 Author Posted February 20, 2009 Ok so I have started the cage. Got it painted and used some heat shrink tubbing for the padding, got the idea from another builders pics on here. Does anyone have any ideas as to what i could use as like zip-ties or straps for the padding. I tried fishing string but the knots came out to big.
Casey Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 I would just leave the zip ties off, as I think no matter what you use, the zip ties are going to look too big. We're talking 1/8" divided by 25 = really, really small. I've seen people attempt to replicate every little detail from a 1:1 car, and it often looks too cluttered. I suggest you keep it simple. One other suggestion- try your local hobby shop for thin aluminum sheet from K&S. It'll be easier to cut, shape and work with than step flashing (though that is a good idea) and you'll have a larger flat piece to use, too.
John Pol Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Pretty neat idea for the panels in the interior was it hard to cut, what kind of glue did you use and also where do get this stuff and whats it called.I think it would be neat for a couple projects I`m working on.Who said your to old to learn new tricks. John Pol It is called "step flashing" atleast thats what the sticker said. I got it at my local hardware store for 19cents a piece, they come in that L shape and are about 8in x 8in. They are about the thickness of soda can and cut pretty easy with just a pair of household scissors.
45calibermodel Posted February 21, 2009 Author Posted February 21, 2009 Ok so here is my halon system. I used a fire extinguisher from a monster truck kit, cut and drilled the top. Used some braided wire for my hard line and some jewelry cord for the switch wire. This is the ignition module. I cut a solid piece out of a parts box exhaust system, and put some grooves in it. It will get the wires later. Thanks for looking.
45calibermodel Posted February 22, 2009 Author Posted February 22, 2009 Halon system, battery, and ignition plus some decals installed in the interior. Next to come is the door pops and shut straps and the roll cage which will be done tonight if it kills me
45calibermodel Posted February 22, 2009 Author Posted February 22, 2009 Ok so I said I would get the cage in tonight along with some other things and I have done it WOOHOO! Now on to the pedals, dash, and seat but thats for another day.
horsepoweraddict Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 The interior is turning out awesome keep up the good work.
45calibermodel Posted February 28, 2009 Author Posted February 28, 2009 Here are the pedals, dash, seat and steering wheel. Now on to the body. Thanks for looking.

Blue coyote Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I keep looking....and looking....but I can't see anything wrong! Looks good, man
Dragline Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 For a guy who used to follow the directions and rush this is the next level for sure. Please, never build them like you used to ever again. I can only imagine that the results [which are most excellent BTW], are feeling very rewarding at this time. So what have we learned? 1: NEVER follow the kits plans............ 2: DO something to enhance the stock kit. 3: NEVER listen to some Schmuck on the Internet. 4: Disregard everything I've written and HAVE FUN modeling at your own pace and level. This is making me want to whip out my own Mustang II kit. How I wished they'd have molded it in white. I'll bet there was a sale on red styrene. I'll be watching this. Bob F
45calibermodel Posted May 4, 2009 Author Posted May 4, 2009 MAN, all I can say is thank you guys for your support. This has been a real learning experiance so far. Im going to make sure to keep it updated with lots of pics. Thanks again.
