ModelcarJR Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Started this kit yesterday. Its not a very good kit and I don't know why I bought it. I told myself to quit buying MPC kits but I don't listen very well. So I painted it with a can of Testors Extreme Lacquer Icy Blue that I had on the shelf just to get rid of it. The humidity according to my Thermometer was good at 40% but the temperature was 104 on my back patio. I went for it anyway and primered, painted all parts and cleared the body and related parts today. Not too bad considering the paint used but I'll have plenty of work and time getting an smooth finish. But it will keep me busy while the heat is on! Thanks for looking! ? 6
1972coronet Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 Looks like a nice match to KB5 (1973-1974 colour). I, too, have the most recent issue of the old MPC 1974 Road Runner (whose origins date to the 1971 annuals , updated ad seq. ) . It's one of my favourite body styles of the 1971-1974 B-bodies. Last one I built was 20 years ago (the dreadful RC2 era release) ; painted it TB3 Basin Street Blue (colloq., "Petty Blue" - a shade different from the actual blue used by Petty & company), and added a correct 1971-1972 dashboard from my parts box. Yes, the kit needs some massaging, but will present well when completed. Keep up the great work !
ModelcarJR Posted June 16, 2023 Author Posted June 16, 2023 Thanks, John! I appreciate your comment! Rubbed out the body today and got it foiled. Turned out better than I thought it would even though the paint and metallic particles are too thick. it sometimes makes the finish seem uneven but it just the particles in the paint. So I'll call this one a success! I will be going to a contest tomorrow with some of my other builds so this one will sit until I get back. Thanks for looking! ? 2
KWT Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 Looks good so far. I've actually always wanted to build this kit... buut I have a love/hate relationship with most AMT/MPC kits I've tried to build. Interested to see how you feel about this one.
bisc63 Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 Paint looks very nice, and the hoods on these are among my favorites of the muscle car (and slightly beyond) era. This will be fun to follow.
ModelcarJR Posted June 20, 2023 Author Posted June 20, 2023 Thanks, Jeremy, Rusty, and Carl! I appreciate your comments! Finished the engine and I am ready to finish the interior. Nothing special on the engine - added plug wires and will add a decal and heater hoses on final assembly. Thanks for looking! ? 4
atomicholiday Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 Looking really good so far.? That paint job is sharp!
ModelcarJR Posted June 20, 2023 Author Posted June 20, 2023 Thanks, Jeremy! I appreciate your comment! Finished the interior painted with Krylon Satin Black that I had to dull down a bit with Dullcote. Must be the temperature. Used the alternate steering wheel because the other one in the kit was bent and I couldn't straighten it very well. Painted the wood color with Testors square bottle Leather color. Hardware was colored with chrome pen. Very simple- I didn't even add a turn signal indicator or gauge detail of decals. Thanks for looking! 2
ModelcarJR Posted June 22, 2023 Author Posted June 22, 2023 (edited) Thanks, Dan and Carl! I appreciate your comments! Finished this one, except decals. The engine bay doesn't look too bad straight on but from the side you can see where the inner fender liners do not meet the inner fender. If I would have known that I would have added some plastic to the inner fender liner tops. I don't think its anything I did wrong in construction, its just bad kit engineering, I think. I added mirror foil to the outside mirrors and pinned the mirrors, neither of which was any fun. Very tiny cuts of mirror foil and very tiny mirror stems or mounts to drill into. I used a #72 drill bit which barely fit the stem. I haven't added the heater hoses yet and am thinking that I probably won't. I'm just going to add the decals and then this one will sit in the scrapbooking case on the shelf. Thanks for looking! ? Edited June 22, 2023 by ModelcarJR Copy text 4
KWT Posted June 23, 2023 Posted June 23, 2023 Regardless of the kits shortcomings, it's looking awesome. I may end of with this after all. I'll be picking your brain for sure
slusher Posted June 23, 2023 Posted June 23, 2023 I built mine several years ago with.after market decals and it’s a great shelf model. I like yours in blue John…
ncbuckeye67 Posted June 23, 2023 Posted June 23, 2023 Great looking build, I love the blue! I have a couple of these in my stash (best body style of this "family" in my opinion).
ModelcarJR Posted June 25, 2023 Author Posted June 25, 2023 Thanks, Jeremy, Carl, and Jeff! I appreciate your comments! See "Under Glass" for the final photos with decals. Thanks for looking! ?
