I have started on the Monogram Chaparral 2D car. What type of paint would give a period correct finish?

Is the underside really brown??

Thanks, Karl

My vote would be for non-clear-coated lacquer, wet-sanded to remove any orange peel, and polished, but not to a mirror finish.

Try to avoid the dipped-in-syrup look that's popular even with 1:1 restorers.

A buddy and I had the good fortune one day to randomly and unexpectedly hear Jim Hall tell a few Chaparral stories with three of the race cars behind him...  He explained that the Chaparral race cars are not white.  What????  Yeah right, go tell that to anybody. They put a very small amount of black in the paint so the cars did not look like refrigerators on the track.  It was so little that the cars still looked white.

MCW lists 6002 Ermine White as the Chaparral color. It's available in lacquer or enamel.  https://mcwfinishes.com/shop

I used the lacquer when I did my 2D.

Chaparral 2D RR 1

Is that just the lacquer? Any clear? Trying to get the sheen right.

That looks very nice!!

Yes sir, definitely not a high gloss. What would your suggestion be to polish it and not get the mirror finish?

I probably used a light coat of TS-13, but I agree in principle with Ace's suggestion if you're going for absolute authenticity. I don't believe they were using clear coats back then.
