The headlamps were put there for the kits, which used clear lenses for the custom grille.  In the case of the Falcon, I'm not sure the '62 kit used them.  But the '60 and '61 did.

Thanks Mark! I knew someone with more knowledge would chime in.

How about opening the Ranchero kit and using the roof corner to make a resin mold?

That would work, but as I'm not set up to do resin I think it'd be a lot cheaper to sacrifice a cheap-ish kit. On the other hand I do want to try making some of my own stuff...:)

If you have a couple Rancheros, dig right in!   They're only plastic.

Same issue you have...

Sacrificed a Ranchero body to the model gods...

End result was worth it.  I saved an old original survivor!

And nothing ever goes to waste!

Anyhow, here is my repair so far. I used thin sheets of styrene and built it up to a little over the thickness I needed. Sanded and filed on it for a bit to shape it. I'm not totally mad at it. Needs some finesse which I'm not sure I'm capable of. I shot some primer to see where I was working better. Comments and suggestions welcome.

Nicely done, Tom! In retrospect, this might have been cleaner, at least for me. I love the use of the bed to build that rat rod. The great thing about plastic is that...it's plastic!

Let the glue and primer dry for a solid day, then take another look at it. To get a contour right, try gluing a guide block over it (using tacky glue or double stick tape) over the area and working it with a file or sanding stick. Remove the guide later.

Looks really good. Trust me: if you have the skill to get it that far, you can certainly get it the rest of the way.  :D

Man, coming from you, that is high praise. Thanks for the vote of confidence!

Can you explain this a little further for my weak brain? It sounds like you might be suggesting a contour template?

You could put a protective cover over the glass and insert it to give you some backing when sanding. If really brave cut the corner piece of the glass that is in that area and glue it in place. Looks good so far. Wish I knew of your dilemma years ago as I built a sprint car using the rear end of a Falcon, I had a full roof.

I actually clamped the glass in place to help maintain the contour. I found it difficult to keep the post aligned and the roof square without it. Since its full of stress cracks I won't be using it except for potentially a junkyard diorama.

As far as the roof - I hope it went to a good home. It seems like all of these are broken for some reason.

Put those is the parts box!  Never enough headlights!

I never throw out anything useful in styrene terms any more. My kids are gonna hate me when I'm gone! :)

Teach them now how to use that stuff!  Then there won't be anything for them to complain about!?

Too late! I tried to get my boy interested long ago but he is now 34 and out in the world. I think video games were a big part of the reason. On the bright side, he's now a professional hydro-electric engineer, so the games didn't seem to melt his brain. :)

Exactly. Something with a radius that you can follow.
