NYLIBUD Posted April 5, 2024 Posted April 5, 2024 (edited) At about 10:25 am,today,a mild earthquake, about 4.7 magnitude shook parts of the East coast.I live on LI,NY,and we felt our entire house shake. It only lasted a few short seconds, but it was the strangest feeling.Im sleeping in bed, being my day off, when out of no where,my bed began to shake,(most action it’s seen in months).?.From what I heard, the damage was very light. We had no damage. But still, when your house starts to move on its own,,it’s a bit unnerving..Just curious,if anybody else felt it?I hope there were no injuries or major damage. Its pretty rare to feel an earthquake here in NY,but I guess they do happen from time to time. bobss396 Posted April 5, 2024 Posted April 5, 2024 I'm in West Islip and it lasted maybe 10 seconds. Scared the cat... I got up and saw a TURKEY in my yard, a first for that here. Animals will do weird things before a quake hits.
TonyK Posted April 5, 2024 Posted April 5, 2024 Glad you're ok and got to experience an earthquake. Here on the west coast I can tell you a few stories from my life time. 1

Yup this is true.I’m sure there were plenty of animals out there acting strange just before the quake.I can’t recall the last time NY/NJ,had a quake.
NYLIBUD Posted April 5, 2024 Author Posted April 5, 2024 Just saw this on TV.This is how rare earthquakes occur in NY,/East coast.I don’t know how folks on the West coast, like CA deals with so many quakes.?♂️? 1
bobss396 Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 We had an aftershock at 6 PM. I felt at least 2 of them. In 2011 we had one, I was at work. My wife worked in a GLASS building up by the Expressway. Just to be safe I will sleep on the main floor in a comfy recliner tonight. The cat was glued to me all day.
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 There was a 4.9 centered near Chattanooga Tennessee that we felt here back in April of 2003. It hit around 05:00 and freaked my cat out. I went back to sleep.
NYLIBUD Posted April 6, 2024 Author Posted April 6, 2024 (edited) Yup,we felt two very mild aftershocks later in the day..I did hear some reports that there were some broken glass on some high rise buildings.Again,I just hope there were no serious injuries, major damage,or anymore scared cats.?,lol.. I felt the 2 or more right at 6 PM. I texted my sister in Bohemia, she was home and felt it too, so did my girlfriend in Rocky Point. My buddy down the street... he did not notice either and he runs an auto repair shop close by. My son works for the MTA in Coney Island and he felt it. I slept in my bed last night, if something else happened, I slept thru it. In my house, the whole place shook, nothing really audible like glasses in the cabinets.
Brian Austin Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 The jolt was reportedly felt up here in MA, though I missed it. We do get small quakes up here from time to time.
Freeman Cars Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 You know out hear in so cal a 4.7 would hardly get any attention.

I've slept through a 5.1, back in the day. On 4/5/2024 at 2:51 PM, NYLIBUD said: .I don’t know how folks on the West coast, like CA deals with so many quakes. To answer your question, we have the same thoughts about folks who live anywhere there is a "Season" for disasters. Tornado Season, Hurricane Season, Blizzard Season.... There is no "Earthquake Season". So, we mostly pretend that they are not going to happen. Just like 99% of humanity.
NYLIBUD Posted April 7, 2024 Author Posted April 7, 2024 My nephew, who attends Syracuse university, said he felt it too.Idk,but there are some decent size faults that run across NJ,that stretch well into NYS.
Mike C. Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Didn't feel a thing. My friends out in L.A. laugh at what we east costars call an earthquake. ?
