hedotwo
I haven't posted my parts wants list in a while so I thought I'd post now and see if anyone thinks they can help out. I have kits and parts to trade or anything else that might work for you. I'll also list the restorable builder cars I'm looking for as well. All of the parts and builder cars I need are annuals, no later releases. I can help with wheel cover ID too, because I know it's not easy to dig through a box of misc covers. I much prefer restorable builders in most any condition, but they'd need to at least have the scripting and emblems intact. I'm adding pix of some of the kits I'd be willing to trade and I have annual parts for trade as well. I know it's a long list and thanks bunch for looking! StevenGuthmiller
Just a couple of things that might possibly help you in your search Rich. First, there are several kits that you listed parts wants for that will do just as well with parts taken from more modern kits, especially things such as wheel covers. For instance, the '58 Chevy, '59 Edsel, and '60 Impala all have modern counterparts that you can take wheel covers from. (The '58 Edsel "spinner" wheel cover was an available option in 1959) A few of the other parts, such as the '61 Impala chassis, (should be interchangeable with several other annual style Chevrolet chassis from '61-'64) and the '61 Galaxie fender ornaments can be found in the AMT '61 "Club Coupe" reissued in recent years. Another one to scratch off of your list is the '62 Pontiac Bonneville "stock wheel covers". The AMT '62 Bonneville kit never contained stock wheel covers. Only "8-Lug" wheels, which can be found in numerous other kits. I'll scrounge through some of my stuff to see if I can help you with any of the other stuff Rich. Good luck! hedotwo
Right you are Steve, there are later release sources for some of my needs. I actually found a set of late release 58 Impala wheel covers that resemble (or vice versa) the original promo covers. I really try to avoid those generic 58 tri-bar covers if I can. That's why I'm looking for another set of 58 Buick promo covers for my 58 kit convertible. I picked up a set for the Buick kit hardtop a while back. For the 59 Edsel ht and 58 cv that I finished I used the late release 58 Edsel for the covers. Now I could use two more sets of them for my annual 59 cv and 58 ht. Not about to buy the kits for the covers though ?. I have junker 62 and 63 impalas that I can source for the chassis... thanks for that tip. I need one for a 61 promo Impala 4 door that I'm almost finished bringing back from the dead (LOTS of broken body work was needed) that had a friction chassis that I want to replace. The other I need for the 77 resin Caprice 4 door I've been fighting with for months. Originally I had planned on using the frame from the 65 Riviera and had modified to fit the width of the Caprice, but.... final assembly showed the wheel base to be off just enough to make everything look wonky. When I looked for the GM x-frames like you suggested I found that the wheelbase on these are just a little longer than the Riv and look really good when put up against the body. Not sure how the 1:1 wheelbases are on all these but all I know is it seems good with this build now. Now I just need to narrow the chassis to fit the resin body. Thanks for the tip on the Ford fender ornaments and the 62 Bonneville 8 lugs. Thanks for your input Steve Rich
bisc63
Am I reading you right...you want a Chevy x-frame to put under a 77 Caprice? You realize Chevy stopped using the x-frame in 1964, don't you?! Apologies if I'm misreading here. If accuracy is your goal, then '65 and up is what you want, and there are plenty to choose from now! Best of luck. hedotwo
I finished the Caprice a while back and used an X frame (yes, I'm fully aware of X frame history ?) that I had in one of my parts boxes and it fit nicely with some massaging to fit the resin body. As with most of my builds in the past year or two I'm no longer overly concerned about underhood or chassis detail correctness. They end up in my display cases likely never to be moved again. I know that's hard to stomach for lots of folks, but at my age and the number of projects I'd still like to start and finish before I no longer can, it works for me ?. I've built long enough to have been there and done that with detailing what I won't be able to see but I definitely continue to appreciate those that do great detailing and post their builds. Here's the thread on the finished project.... Thanks Rusty!
bisc63
I totally get where you're coming from. I think the popularity of some of the recent re-releases from round two stems from more builders focusing on the shelf appearance of the final piece. Curbside builds have come full circle. There are still plenty of details to focus on to making a curbside look realistic, and a huge percentage of models are viewed sitting in their case or on a shelf. (I'd rather no one picked up my models to flip them over! ) Nice job on that Caprice. Those body styles are near and dear to me, as my late dad had an Impala that year or thereabouts with the cool wrap-around back glass.
