This is out of the old AMT kit. A challenge to build but worth it. This car is special to me. While it isn't my best work, I saw the car race at and get destroyed at Indy. Swede was a great racer.

I had to scratch build the shifter and linkage from a etch metal window crank and some round stock.

Great work! Not your best, eh? well, Ilike it. Don't think enough credit has been given to Swede Savage. He was just becoming a force to be reckoned with when he had that terrible Indy wreck. Might have been series champion. Ck out www.swedesavage.com.

To add to all of this, I am also good friends with Bobby Unser. A few years ago he sent me a Carousel model of his 75 winning Eagle with his autograph on the hood.

I've been going to Indy since I was 4 and have had some small tech sponsorships on a couple of cars.

I agree that the seventies were really the best. Some great battles in the 80's and early 90's. I have boycotted the last two years. It's all turned into a spec series much like a high powered go cart series.

Looks great! I'd like to find a few copies of that kit and build some of those cars. A couple of questions:

What color is that? Is the paint flourescent? I know sometimes it doesn't photograph well.

What decals did you use? From the kit? The white areas look really opaque; something that doesn't happen very often...

Rick;

The paint is STP red lacquer from Model Car Warehouse and the decals are from www.Indycals.net. That guy makes excellent decals.

The kit is NOT up to modern standards. Another big hint: Use a straight pin to attache the rear wing into the top of the transmission. Mucccch sturdier.

Thanks for the tips!

I agree about Indycals; I've used some of his stuff before, but I'm even more impressed by their performance over the red! Maybe I'll have to dig out that MPC '68 turbine car...

I ALWAYS loved this car, I had a Johnny Lightning. The color, wheels, engine, body, is all perfect, my favorite Indy car era, I wish the new F1 cars would be this nice looking, although, they do look like the early 90's cars a little. :)

Nice Job, The color looks fantastic. Very clean build.

I've tried a couple of types of paint. The spray can stuff is wayyyy to thick. The MCW lacquer was very easy to shoot. 26 psi. 3 coats. It does seem to suck up the clear coat though.
