Have a question about the Revell 1932 Ford 5 window coupe. What is the best way to paint the black panel insert on the on the roof? I would try and mask it off and spray it but my taping skills are pretty bad. So if I were brush paint it would Tamiya semi gloss bottle paint be my best option? Also what is the best brush to use? I was thinking about buying a really good brush in an art store. If anyone can share some suggestions I would appreciate it. Thank you.

You could apply, and trim, Bare-Metal Foil to mask around the opening, then use tape and paper to cover the rest of the body.

I might try painting the roof insert first, and then masking it, and painting the body. Might be easier to control the bleed through, and make better touch-ups.

For a Brush, You want a Flat Brush not pointed, about 1/4" wide. A good quality brush will be easier to use, but requires more care in clean up.

To paint the '32 Ford roof insert, and just about any other panel for that matter, I would mask off the area around the insert with masking tape. I use a round toothpick or any tool with the general shape to burnish the tape into the groove around the insert. Use the grove as a guide for a sharp #11 blade to make a final edge between the painted body and the insert. As an additional safety measure a light dusting of a clear paint to help seal the edge if that is a concern. Usually, the paint finish for the insert would have some sort of texture to represent a fabric rather than a solid metal surface and this type of finish is harder to completely protect from paint seeping under the tape. After the insert area has been painted and dried, I would gently go around the edge of the tape again lightly cutting the painted edge before removing the tape to prevent the possibility of any paint peeling.

You can mask right over the soft top panel lines. Recess them ( burnish if you will) into the groove using the back side of a plastic knife. Then cut the line using a new sharp single edge razor blade made for scrapers or the small box cutters. These are sharp but have the support on the back edge. You can buy these by the dozen or even 100 in a box for a few bucks. These are sharper than a #11, stiffer than a scalpel blade. Then just peel up the inner portion of tape. Just cut slowly, it takes little pressure and is easy to do.

Now with that masked, paper off the rest and spray the panel. You will get a clean sharp edge..

I’ve had success in painting a piece of Bare Metal Foil with Tamiya acrylic paints and applying it as usual. The paint is flexible enough and seems to bond well to the foil.
