Looking sharp. I was eyeing up those air cleaners and now seeing them on your project I think I will order a set too. They look awesome. Your building up a good lookin and tough star-car!

Yeah go for it , Landon. I like them and will get an other couple sets. They paint up easily as well. I don’t think you will be disappointed. Thanks for checking in.

With the engine change , as mentioned , I also changed out the turbo as once again, to my eyes the Italeri kit ones look a little under sized. To me they look too narrow so I thought I would change it out for an old school AMT turbo off one of my 40 year old junk yard engines. So that’s what happened, a bit of a test as it had to be cut-off the old one taken apart as best as possible. Apparently I used some glue back then 🙄… re assembled and slightly modified. And it fit just right. But with that as it is bigger than the standard kit one I had to seriously modify the air intake for it. Not anything like some of the mods other guys are doing on this site but never the less it needed to be completely cut into pieces and remanufactured with different measurements. Annnd……. It fits !!

In my experience with heavy haul they need a winch and a decent headache rack. So once again 3d Concepts “ to the rescue” as they say.  Karl at 3d is an Alberta crane operator and has huge working knowledge of winches and has now put a number of different ones in his catalog. The one picked is a Braden TR12 which I believe is a 75 ton winch and a Peerless Headache rack which the real ones are built in Penticton British Columbia ….

It’s time for a mock up. The paint has been laid, it is Stop Light Red MM enamel and went down very well. I wish they hadn’t stopped making it ……. But I digress. Anyway here is a shot of a mock up… showing the changed out rims and tires. Just trying to make it a little different than a run of the mill box stock build , I have two different Peerless headache racks. A tall one and a short one, this shows the taller one a d looking at it , I decided it was too tall and opted for the shorter one which to my eyes looked better with a flat top sleeper. I also used the automotive ‘chrome’ tape for the lower aluminum body panel that was on ALL of our trucks.

You got that "mean" and "tough" look going now on the truck and its stance look very proper, Jeff.

White wheels, the black frame with various chrome parts, and the red body, all looking first-class.

And the winch setup looks authentic, nice touch!

Nice and interesting project, I'm working on an Italeri Freigtliner and see these headache racks on trucks for sale on the webb. Is there a law on these in the US and does any know when that law came ?

Hey Ulf

The purpose of a headache rack is to stop a load that comes loose from going through the cab and killing the driver (severe headache!) And I don't think there is a law prohibiting the use of one in the US.

There is an OH&S requirement here in BC as well the BC Motor Vehicle act and Commercial Transport act makes it a requirement or law .  And as a safety item, its a really good idea. And most of the racks or a lot of them are made by Peerless right here in British Columbia. I’ not sure of the regulations in the USA.

The engine is installed and filled the spot quite well. And everything seems to fit ok

I obtained a ‘work’ platform from the boys at 3dConcepts for the headache rack and winch. Got it installed and the sleeper sits on it and lines up to the cab perfectly.

Looking good, Jeff!  The work platform fits in well - is using the work platform another reason for going with the lower headache rack?  Going to look great, when all the parts are finally in place!

Thanks Brian, no not really, the taller headache rack is more for the rounded or aerodyne style sleepers, and the lower one is much more suited for the flat top sleepers.... the taller one would have worked but I think in this particular case the lower one looked just a little sharper ..........

Did a little detailing on the headache rack…. It needed a few things that would make a haul a bit easier and legal . So With that in mind I added synches ( you guys call them ‘binders’ , I’m old school and that is what I was taught ) chains and hooks, roto lights, back up lights, and the ‘over sized’ load sign. Which is intentionally folded back because here in BC it is not to be displayed if there is no oversized load being hauled, but a lot of guys just leave them up. I supposed if CVSE has noting to do they would stop them and pinch them. Anyway no fines here….
Its  ready to mount , just needs a little weathering.

Well…. I think I have done as much damage to this kit as I can , for better or worse, I think I will call it done. I will post a couple pics in the U/G section for anyone interested.
