rattle can man Posted February 6 Posted February 6 I have a set of Sears decals I stumbled on going through my stash. They are from an AMT truck kit, but older than the NASCAR trucks. numbers on the back are 5902701 and DH1026 73 30M. It includes a list of Testors colors used to mix the old sears green. Any ideas what kit it is from? I'm guessing a big-rig and trailer combo, possibly 1/43?
rattle can man Posted February 7 Author Posted February 7 Posting a picture of the decal side is pretty useless, as the white doesn't show up in the picture I took. I've never seen a decal sheet with paint mixing instructions before.
LennyB Posted February 7 Posted February 7 A google search for AMT and Sears truck and this comes up.
rattle can man Posted February 7 Author Posted February 7 It is not the NASCAR truck. definitely pre-dates that It is a small sheet with Sears in white within a white rectangle and a few black stripes. At one end it has vague instructions on how to mix the old Sears green and a small paint chip to judge the color by. I remember similar markings on sears catalogs growing up in the '70. The sheet has no other sponsor logos, no Diehard, no numbers. Judging by how yellowed the paper is, it has to be early '70s or earlier.
Can-Con Posted February 8 Posted February 8 I found this but it's Ertl and appears to be stamped steel. I don't remember ever seeing a kit that looks like this, Harry.
rattle can man Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 bingo on the style! If you read the text it calls out paint color suggestions for the Sears green, so I would think it was a kit. I don't know of any pressed steel trucks that you painted yourself. It came in a "junkyard" lot from an online auction at some point is all I can figure.
slusher Posted February 8 Posted February 8 I remember their dilivery vans being that color. My parents shopped at sears and K-Mart all the time and now their gone..
rattle can man Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 I remember that too. It was the same logo on their catalogs if I remember correctly. Part of why I'm curious about what kit they came from. I don't recall ever seeing a sears truck kit from the late '70s when I started building on up to present day. All I've come up with for searches are the Die Hard NASCAR truck if I search Sears truck and just random stuff if I try the numbers from the back of the sheet.
rattle can man Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 Thank you Sean! I had seen the K-Mart, 7 Up, etc, but not the Sears version. 1
Mark Posted February 8 Posted February 8 The Sears version may have been exclusive to their stores. Sears was hit-and-miss when it came to model kits after the early Seventies, but they probably still had enough stores carrying them to justify a special issue.
