Jürgen M. Posted February 22 Posted February 22 (edited) Hi Folks, I originally wanted to make a stock build with self printed parts added here and there. My parts boxes are full and I spread the best parts out on the bench but didn't really find anything that would fit together! I thought of something with an Aerodyne sleeper but somehow I wasn't really convinced of the idea. Then I looked through my virtual boxes and finally had the idea to build a Mack Superliner! It's going to be another completely printed model. These are the first parts and a virtual mock-up: The sleeper will have a walk through opening! I decided for a tri-drive. Don't have one yet. The sleeper is the one I designed for my Rubber Duck over-do. I just copied the gap for the left hand exhaust to the driver's side. I still have the option of using a KW Aerodyne sleeper instead! That would look a bit like this: The side window struts broke off, I'll have to replace them. These are the front wheels I chose: With floaters, sort of! They're European trailer tires from Italeri. A bit fatter than the Standard truck tires! Printed cab and hood: Chassis frame halbes: Hope you enjoy the build! Edited February 22 by Jürgen M. 6
Rockford Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Those tyres are called Super Singles in UK. This is going to be another amazing build. I think we can forgive you the sacrilege of an Aerodyne sleeper on a Mack! 😜 Looking forward to seeing this come together. 1
Jürgen M. Posted February 23 Author Posted February 23 😂 Thanks Steve! I had forgotton what the tires are called. I'll try to keep that! 👍 Im probably going to stay with the R.D. sleeper. Looks better to me! But to tell the truth I did find pics of Superliners with Aerodyne sleepers that looked very much like the KW type! This Aussie Mack for example! Not bad but still I'm trending to stay with the printed sleeper! No offence to any Aussies here on the forum! I'm a big fan of Australian trucks but I prefer the Superliner with a flat top sleeper! 3
Jürgen M. Posted February 23 Author Posted February 23 The chassis is slowly taking shape: The drive axles are printed: ...and put into place carefully to see if everything fits: 3
Rockford Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Amazing work, axles look great. I still can't believe how quickly you work! Well done. 1
Jürgen M. Posted February 23 Author Posted February 23 Thanks Steve, but it's not that hard when you can copy and change 3D files. The drive axles as well as the suspension were taken from my KW K100. (OK, that might not quite be authentic for a Mack truck but the truck won't care! 😂) I just added one more axle and drive shaft and copied one set of springs to the rear and that was it. The rest is just printing. The tough part will actually be the engine! I'm designing a V8. Don't ask what kind! I took the details from the AMT GMC General instructions and tried to design it somehow similar. Still a lot to do there but I'm sure it'll look half way realistic! Some of you guys will probably shake your heads on this unprofessional mix but I call it freedom of art. Hope nobody thinks I'm disrespectful to those who go into huge efforts to make their builds as realistic as possible but that's the way I like to do it. 2
BK9300 Posted February 23 Posted February 23 I agree, Jürgen, once you get a project underway, you make good progress right away! Will you be making a pass through in the front of your sleeper compartment?
Biggu Posted February 23 Posted February 23 JM , Steve is right. Your builds move at lightning speed from design to completion and they are getting better and better every time. Your design work and printing progress is gaining a huge knowledge base and you are getting some unique units in your collection. Love the updates as there is always something new to see and learn. Keep going, this is fun.

I really appreciate that and it motivates me to do more! 1

Oh , dude, you are way ahead of me, I just glue bits of plastic together, you, old buddy DESIGN and MAKE your parts and that is a whole other level.
Jürgen M. Posted February 23 Author Posted February 23 You're too kind Jeff! But you don't just glue bits of plastic together! When I look at earlier builds Like that Pete conventional or your Hayes or your current threads I take a bow! We all have our abilities and learn from eachother! I enjoy learning new techniques and about trucks in general hoping to improve my models! 1
Jürgen M. Posted February 24 Author Posted February 24 A bit of progress: The front axle with steering is assembled. Brake drums included: Front axle is in place and the panhards and stabilisers: Have to cut three brass rods to length for the rear axles, then I can add the rear brake drums too! 2
Randy D Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Hello Jurgen, As always, fascinating to watch you design, print and build your trucks!!! Randy 1
Jürgen M. Posted February 24 Author Posted February 24 (edited) Chassis on wheels mock-up and the quarter-fenders: Took those out of the box. They were originally from the Alaskan Hauler! Connected them with a brass rod. Edited February 24 by Jürgen M. 3
vincen47 Posted February 24 Posted February 24 The work you’ve done on the computer is great, it’s a whole other dimension of our hobby.
Jürgen M. Posted February 25 Author Posted February 25 (edited) Thanks very much! I just wanted to be independent of the offered kits. I had almost all the trucks on the kit market. Of course not all kits but the variety of models. That's why I figured it would be a good idea to make my own. I do admit though that I have taken over parts like chassis and engines from one printed model to the next, not always being authentic with the details of the different makes. Means I used a chassis from a KW for a Marmon, an engine from a Mack for a Diamond Reo, ... and so on. Only a few models were more or less based on the real thing. You get lazy after a while. It's like building out of stock. You take what's there and do a few modifications instead of scratch building a whole new part! Im glad you like my builds! Thanks again! 😊 Edited February 25 by Jürgen M. 2
Jürgen M. Posted February 25 Author Posted February 25 Had to print the hood for the third time! Finally it's OK! Put some putty on top cause the print layers are too strongly visible due to the slight radius of the top of the hood. Would have looked like wood! After sanding it it'll look nice and smooth! I also printed the firewall... found an old Mack windshield in the box ... Maybe I can get it cleaned carefully? And this is a step for the fuel tanks. Put holes in instead of pimples! Jeff (Biggu) gave me the idea! Thanks for that Pal! 👍 Had to re-drill the 1mm holes I had designed into them cause they do get a bit smaller when printed, especially in that size. The risk of them closing when being painted is just too big. Both steps together came up with 390 holes to drill by hand. Nice job if you're bored! 😁 2
Biggu Posted February 25 Posted February 25 This is just plain cool ! Glad you could get the holes onto the steps. They look great. 1
Jürgen M. Posted February 26 Author Posted February 26 (edited) This is the bumper I'm planning to use: It was left over from my Mack DM800 over-do. So it sort of stays in the family! These are the air cleaners I've chosen: ... and here's my design: I changed it a little bit but it still looks almost the same! Edited February 26 by Jürgen M. 1
Biggu Posted February 26 Posted February 26 See what I mean ….. you look at a picture , jump on the computer push the mouse around, touch a button and ‘poof’ there is the part ! You are WAY ahead of me buddy. This is just cool. I love your air cleaner design. Looks great to me and will really look good on the truck. Keep going. Very fun to watch.

That "poof* thing is funny! 😂 It's unfortunately not quite that easy but I admit, it's easier than scratch building! Didn't get anything done today! Too much Work to do! Maybe tomorrow again. 1
