absmiami Posted March 15 Author Posted March 15 as I said - this particular Lotus is an old friend: I happened upon R2 [it was then R11] at Laguna Seca at the Monterey vintage races over 30 years ago - it was then owned by Pete Lovely. It was being serviced in the pits - thereby revealing its charms to all who passed by.
absmiami Posted March 15 Author Posted March 15 (edited) this is - actually - the same race car - sporting the '69 season tobacco livery - and the dozens of changes that Team Lotus made to create the 49Bs. I'm glad that MacAllister restored R2 to it's '67 season spec. And it was worth the long drive up to Amelia to see it again ... and oh by the way - that is Lovely's famous Volks transporter in the backdrop ... I messed up - should have taken a dozen pix of the transporter - oh well ... Edited March 16 by absmiami Sp
Bainford Posted April 4 Posted April 4 Thanks much for posting all of this, Andrew. I have just spent an enjoyable 1 hr+ going over the details. Excellent reference if I ever get around to do my long awaited 49 build, but I keep putting it off because I know I will be into a multi-year project. Best detail photos I've yet seen showing the construction of the windscreen. I have only encountered a 49 once in my life, at the Beaulieu Museum in England back in 2002. It was a quiet day and the care-taker was lavishing attention on the 49, and politely answered all my questions and filled me with interesting anecdotes, and allowed me to get up close and personal with the car. I was still using 35 mm cameras then, and car museums are always notioriously under-lit (why is that), Beaulieu particularly so, so my photos are not great. I have long forgotten what chassis number it was.
Misha Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Wow, thanks for all the great detailed photos of Clark’s Lotus Andrew! One of the most significant race cars of all time. In addition the other photos are excellent, I’m sure you had a fabulous day! Cheers Misha
absmiami Posted April 9 Author Posted April 9 Could there be another Merit kit bash in my future ?? 1
absmiami Posted April 10 Author Posted April 10 the lighting at the Beaulieu Nat Auto Museum was never adequate for indoor film photography ... these shots of the Hill 49 were taken fifteen years before your visit ...
absmiami Posted April 10 Author Posted April 10 this is R3 - the most untouched of the survivors - I would like to see R3 get a mechanical restoration so that it could at least be demo - ed ...
absmiami Posted April 10 Author Posted April 10 (edited) R3 and R2 are both 49A s - R2 was converted to B Spec in '69 - and then converted back to it's 1967 spec by it's current owner... Edited April 10 by absmiami
Bainford Posted April 10 Posted April 10 Cheers Andrew. That's very cool. Great photos. Is R3 still at Beaulieu? I should dig up my old photos (lying somewhere in forgotten boxes in dusty corners).
absmiami Posted April 10 Author Posted April 10 Beaulieu will - I think - never part with R3 .. Stitch up - careful - I've seen some 3D prints of Cosworth engines that are out of scale check everything to the factory drawings in the Oliver Lotus 49 bible ...
