slusher Posted April 4 Posted April 4 Will stock car dirt tires or large prostreet slicks work on my 66 Chevy Impala modified stocker?
Fat Brian Posted April 4 Posted April 4 The tires are pretty close to the size of the big hollow AMT slicks. Tires from a stock car kit are a bit smaller in height and width. 1
Dave G. Posted April 4 Posted April 4 Back in the day we didn't have modified kits. We kit bashed them, mostly old coupes. But a good source of tires for Modified stockers was slot car tires in the right scale. You got that lower wider profile needed. Course I have no idea what might available these days. But it worked back in the 1960's. I remember building my first cut down 36 or 40 Ford coupe, put in a small block Chevy as I recall. And those slot car tires made the build. I cut my own wider rims from the kit rims. 1
slusher Posted April 4 Author Posted April 4 I’m trying to find something small then the goofy tires it came with. Thanks guys

Thanks guys I’m using the old hollow MPC Goodyear blue streaks on all my modified stockers. I’m happy to know I’m not the only one who thinks the ginormous slicks that come in those kits look goofy. 1
bobss396 Posted April 5 Posted April 5 The old MPC line modified tires are decent for treaded tires. Performance Plastics has nice slicks made of rubber. Best overall source, Ron Coon Resins. I have a '66 Impala going (BACK IN THE BOX!!) and used Ron's slicks. I did have to close the rear wheel wells a bit. I'm using a Winston Cup chassis with about a 3/8" stretch. 1
stavanzer Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Here is a Link to Ron's Tires/Wheels. He has many, many options and almost all are for Circle Track cars, both Slicks & Treaded. Excellent Detail, great selection and fast, trustworthy service. I've dealt with Ron 2-3 times now. He is just awesome to deal with. https://roncoon.com/wheels-tires-2/ 1
bobss396 Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Ron Coon is hard to beat for many reasons. He also sells on Etsy, a couple of mouse clicks.. the parts are on their way. 1

Horrorshow Posted Sunday at 02:31 PM Posted Sunday at 02:31 PM I used Plastic Performance for my 66. 1

I am not familiar with them and have never bought them before. If I had 4 prostreet tires from the 70 AMT prostreet ki t I would use them.
stavanzer Posted Sunday at 06:09 PM Posted Sunday at 06:09 PM Carl, the PPP Wheels and tires are somewhat sorted for you by the name on the product. I've linked the Model Roundup page, so you can see what they offer. https://www.modelroundup.com/category-s/129.htm?searching=Y&sort=7&cat=129&show=80&page=1 Ron Coon Resin's also does great tires/rims. I emailed him for advice before I ordered from him , and he was very helpful in his suggestions. Ron has many choices of Rims/Tiires to choose from so, scroll all the way down his list. https://roncoon.com/wheels-tires-2/ As far as sizes go, it's up to you in the end. If you can afford it, I'd buy two sets in different sizes and pick the one you like most, and use the other set on a different project. H.T.H. Alan

Alan I buy a lot from Ron Coon and always wind up buying TOO much. I'd suggest his wheel backs and he has a drum brake set that fits into the backs. I can dig up part numbers if anyone is interested. 1
TECHMAN Posted Monday at 12:00 PM Posted Monday at 12:00 PM CARL, As BOB stated, RON COON sells a lot of different tire/rim combos, cool part, the tires have the sizes listed right with the tires, and along with the size in actual "inch" listings, they also have them in "mm" listing (which in 1/25 scale basically relates to the actual "inch" size of the real tire.) So if you are trying to "replicate" a 30 inch tall tire, look for a 30mm size resin tire, want a 28 inch tall tire, look for 28mm, etc. GOOD LUCK on your hunt... DJ P.S.- I use a lot of RON'S Hoosier Dirt Boss tires and his T30 tire (which is the bigger Hoosier) YOU'LL LIKE EM!!!! 1 1

Now that I have a computer, the plan is to transcribe my notes into an Excel format. What works with what, etc. Some wheel/tire combos leave too little room for his wheel backs. I can only sand so much off them. I have a bunch of kit wheel backs I use as well. 1 1
