Just called my local shop [Elm City Hobbies] Scott says on the shelves August, possibly last week of July.

Just because HPIGuy has a video out of it doesn't mean it's available yet, The model companies usually send him kits to review before they hit the shelves, he doesn't actually go out and buy them from a shop himself.

Explain like I'm a 5 year old: is this kit any better than the Revell/Monogram GT350 (I've got several of those)?  Different year model, better molding etc?  Do I need it, like I need another Mustang kit?

No, it's definitely not as well detailed as the 1/24 Revell/Monogram kit but it is 1/25 scale which some of us prefer.

Some people say the shape of the body is more accurate then the Monogram kit but I couldn't really say as to that.

It features the chassis and engine from the original AMT 1966 notchback kit which is outdated and inaccurate. The Revell kits are better in this area but overall the kits outward appearance is still quite good. IIRC the Only 66 Shelby in the Revell series is a GT350H. You could make the case for preferring it to the Revell 1/24th scale series.

Same kits as the Revell kits, different box, decals and some different parts in some versions.

As far as I can tell, the original first Monogram GT-350 was the only one of them to have the Cragar G/T wheels. After that they all got the Magnum 500s except for the racing Torque Thrusts in the 350-R kits.

All these kits were re-boxed several times as both Revell and Monogram since first released in the mid-'80s.

If you really want one the Monogram kit is the best. Find an original issue and you're good. For me scale is a non issue. I still don't understand the why's and wherefore's of scale preference. Except maybe in the larger scales and room to display them.

All true, but if one specifically wants a ‘66 GT350 the only two options are the new Round2 kit or the Revell GT350H which would require different wheels and decals to duplicate the Round2 kit.

Revell really needs to reissue that ‘65 kit with those wheels.

They're all the same GT-350 kit, just different decals and boxes except the original '65 had the G/T wheels.

Other then that they're all the exact same kit.

This is a tough one for me.

The Revell kit definitely has better details, as the base tooling was created 20+ years after the AMT kit. The chassis and engine are definitely better. The GT350R version is really nice...the parts created for that (racing front valance, exhaust, etc.) are really, really right. The Revell body on the other hand bugs me a little. It's not bad to my eyes, but it does seem a little slab sided, and just a smidge off in how the cab relates to the lower body. it doesn't bug me to the point of offense, but it still does bug me a little.

The AMT kit has what I consider a better body, but almost everything else is worse than the Revell kit. The engine is sort of underscale and basic. The interior is VERY basic. The chassis was decent-to-good for 1966, but very meh now.

I have both kits. I don't want to build both. Don't make me choose! :)

I think I want to raid the GT350R for some of the good stuff, and get an AMT '67 Mustang for the chassis and engine. Not a great solution. That's costly, and I'm not sure the results will be fantastic, but I have them, so I think that's what I'm going to do with them.
