I usually try to just use a real teller in the bank. There are so many scams to be on the lookout for. A couple of phone scams I recently got was "Why haven't you claimed your prizes yet?" and a "raffle" prize. I gave them very nasty responses and called them out as scammers.

Just today got a call recorded  from "Bell Alient" who actually my internet, TV and house phone is through stating they're planning to run fiber-op through my community soon and to call the number provided to get the free upgrade equipment.

2 problems with that,,

1- Bell NEVER provides free equipment upgrades

and 2= I've had fiber-op for almost 20 years now. 🙄

That just lets scammer know that you are ripe for receiving more scams.  They know they are scammers. I know it makes you feel better, but never reply to scam texts or emails. Delete texts, block them, and report as Spam/Scam.

I don't reply to their texts or emails.

Again, if you just pickup up the phone and say something that puts you on a "live" list which other scammers will use to bother you some more in the future. Best thing to do is not to pick up the phone when you don't know the person calling you. If the are not scammers and really want to get in touch, they will leave a message. With no message, you know you just avoided a scammer. Just giving them your piece of mind, even though it makes you feel better, doesn't matter to them. Getting abused over the phone is their job - they expect that.

I get a ton of calls from "health care providers" regarding "free" back braces and so on. My Medicare info must have been hacked into or sold.

I generally answer in Spanish and the line goes <CLICK>, with a 99% accuracy.

Not answering the phone doesn't do anything. It always get answered even when nobody's home, we have an answering machine. Of course legitimate callers will leave a message.

I disagree.

In my experience, an answering machine often triggers the scammers and robocallers to eventually give up on that number, perhaps scratch it off their lists (metaphorically speaking).

Also in my experience, I get very few robocalls because 1) I never ever give out my numbers to stores or websites, etc., and 2) I never ever live-answer any call I don't recognize on caller ID.

Give your numbers out, you're just begging to be deluged with scam-spam calls.

Why do you think they REALLY want them?

It's not to "make your customer experience better".

They sell 'em. It's just another income stream to them, a constant rain of pennies.

Maybe I'm not clear about this.  When a human picks up the scammers call and starts a live conversation, that tells them that there is someone willing to listen to their spiel. You phone number is tagged as a willing victim (even if you just yell at them).  I understand that most people (you included) have some sort of automatic answering machine which will let the caller leave a message. But scammers never leave a message, because there is nothing for them to gain without being able to talk live.  That's the point.  When the call gets picked up by the answering machine, it is not really useful to scammers. A legitimate call will leave you a message.
