This started out life as a "show" build complete with all the cool features like full engine wiring / plumbing - carpeted / detailed interior - brake lines with parking brake cables - wheel valve stems - MV headlight lenses (Thank You Marc Nellis !!!) and full polished perfect red paint. It got destroyed at the first local show it attended due to a lack of care on the part of the host (different story). Note to self (and others) do not participate in a model contest at a Motorcycle / tattoo show that serves alcohol !! Well it sat in my bitter abyss for1968SHELBY(HEARTLANDNATS).jpg.251129754e7316506661faabc55234f4.jpgever than one day I had a vision and here it is !!! I built the building using craft and popsicle sticks. It was weathered using "weather it" and then was dusted using my lovely fine sand collected from the backs of 1:1 cars that drive on dirt roads.

I had a model melt/warp a little, so it ended up in a diorama.  Good job!  I've collected that same dust too. 😄

Sorry.....What I meant to say was that I collected the fine dusty dirt that would accumulate on the backsides of wheels from cars that frequent dirt roads. I am an auto tech by trade so I see a lot of "dirty" cars !!! When you get it off the wheel either by dropping the wheel on the floor form about 6 inches high or lightly scraping the dirt off it has consistency of baby / talcum powder but brown !!! It is perfect to send through my mechanical sifter.

Thanks for the advice regarding model shows at alcohol fueled biker events. Noteworthy, for sure.🙂

Very sorry to hear of the mishap. That would absolutely suck. One would not likely be in a position to sort out the drunk biker, either, I suppose. I quite like your barn find solution, though. The fine dirt road dust really does look the part. Very cool.

Your comment on road dust got me thinking (and keep in mind, it's been a long day); If one was to rig up some type of shelf on the back bumper of the car, and fasten a small diorama to it, one similar to yours, and go for a drive on a dusty dirt road, the scene could be dust covered in a somewhat natural way that would be very difficult to duplicate otherwise. Well, with my limited experience in weathering, anyway. Yes, I do realise how stupid this sounds, but nonetheless, I am kind of keen to try something like that. Just for giggles. A simple diorama, sturdily built, fastened to the back of the car for a short drive. Hhmmm...

"Sir, do you know why I pulled you over?"
"No officer, I don't"
"You seem to have left something on the back bumper of your car."
"Oh, no worries officer, that just a model diorama."
"Really? What's it doing on the back of your car?"
"Well, I am weathering it, of course."
"I see. Sir, would you mind blowing into this device, please. Don't stop until you hear the 'beep'".
