customline Posted Sunday at 04:37 AM Posted Sunday at 04:37 AM (edited) This is something I started a few years ago. I had this sweet pair of tail lights from the '56 300 that I had to put somewhere. Along came the Del Rey. I unboxed it and saw my wonderful body work....... 🤮 Time to get this one back in action. The chassis is completed with the stock engine mounted. The interror is also finished. It was always a mild custom idea using cast-off junk from the "body parts" box. The color choice is evidence of my early dependence on Krylon. I had modified the side trim and that was the thing that had to go. All of it. Desoto side trim is a candidate for the replacement. Someone suggested quad headlights. I had considered that mod and decided it was too risky. Now I don't give a 💩. I have the noses from the '50 kit so I'm using the one with level quads. The headlights look to be from a Chrysler, the '57 or '58. Sorta balances things out. Chop chop with the saw and lots Dremel work. Trying to make the light pods fit the fender leaves less than zero wiggle room. The pods are really too wide but I thought I could file and feather it into submission. Its got a ways to go. Comments and helpful suggestions will be appreciated. Edited Sunday at 05:10 AM by customline 14
TopherMcGinnis Posted Sunday at 12:45 PM Posted Sunday at 12:45 PM I like your direction on this one. I'm a big custom fan 👍 1
customline Posted Sunday at 01:00 PM Author Posted Sunday at 01:00 PM (edited) My ideas generally cause lots of problems to solve, work around, or ignore. This one sat in the box and I don't remember why but it may have been pushed off the table by the squirrels, although there is some evidence of paint removal. Hopefully the direction it goes is not "south" 😔 Edited Sunday at 01:02 PM by customline

TopherMcGinnis Posted Sunday at 03:28 PM Posted Sunday at 03:28 PM Yeah, life happens. I have north of 50 kits started(to varying degrees). I don't get into the "room" daily due to being self employed, so, I think that plays into it. Along with the squirrels. OOOOO! LOOK! I can build a (whatever)! I need help 🤷🏼♂️ 1

I need help 🤷🏼♂️ Yeah, but when an idea shows up uninvited, you've got to be a good host and invite it in. This is probably why there's so much "junkyard" on eBay and elsewhere. It's just in our nature. 🥴 1
customline Posted Sunday at 03:43 PM Author Posted Sunday at 03:43 PM I wanted to add this shot last night but I got lost. Here's the tail light shots. This mod is the whole purpose of the build. Others may not feel the way that I do about how it looks generally, but it adds to the length of the stubby tri-5. Adding the fins in '57 was a good idea to compete with Fords and Mo-pups till they could roll out the new Impala. Now....what about a chop or maybe partial roof mod? This is my new experiment bitch. 🤣 6
TopherMcGinnis Posted Sunday at 04:36 PM Posted Sunday at 04:36 PM The tail lights look fantastic! I'm not much on chopping the tri-fives. It's not my taste. It's also not my build.

Because there are verticle A & B pillars, a mild chop should be fairly easy and beneficial to the perception of length. It's how to handle the backlight that taxes my mood altered brain.
customline Posted Sunday at 05:52 PM Author Posted Sunday at 05:52 PM Okay, so....before the game starts, I want to....💩! The game started ! Here. You can figure this out. 👇 4
espo Posted Sunday at 05:56 PM Posted Sunday at 05:56 PM #1: Like the "Deviant" name you have hung on this build. #2 I was going to suggest a stacked quad headlight setup, but you are already committed on this. #3 A very mild, no more than a scale 2" chop might look better than a mail slot chop, unless that's the way you want to go. #4 Stay with the interior colors and do something in a pearl finish on the body?

The grille is a done deal politically. I don't want to do everything over. Just continue on till it hits a wall or I finish it. 3) that's exactly what I was thinking! 4) so much for great minds 🤣.....but no two tones! 😖 Edited Sunday at 06:40 PM by customline 1
Katsusauce Posted Sunday at 06:14 PM Posted Sunday at 06:14 PM I'm really diggin' the direction this build is going.

NOBLNG Posted Sunday at 07:32 PM Posted Sunday at 07:32 PM Well you haven’t committed blasphemy….yet, so carry on Jim.😜 I REALLY like the factory tail lights with the hidden gas filler feature….but the Chrysler units look right at home there too. I agree with David, if you decide to chop it, go mild. I will keep checking up on your progress!😎

I know....maybe if I make a hinge for that left one?.....🙂.....🤔......no. I've got an extra set of '56 Chevy tail lights if you want 'em. 🙂 no gas cap, though 🙁 1
Mark W Posted Sunday at 10:35 PM Posted Sunday at 10:35 PM Looking very, very good so far Jim. The head and taillight mod is going to flow with the body lines perfectly. I agree about doing something with the roof, just don’t think you should do an “extreme” chop. More like 2” maybe? This type of custom is one of the best, glad you decided to resurrect it.

Quiet Eric Posted Sunday at 11:06 PM Posted Sunday at 11:06 PM I'm sure you've seen this one before, but in case you hadn't... Perhaps pancaking the hood would help give you some room to blend the new headlight surrounds in on the inside. But what you've got is looking good. 6

Wouldn't be my first. The car in that photo is using the same headlights. It's quite similar. It could use a better side trim idea.
meechum68 Posted yesterday at 01:59 AM Posted yesterday at 01:59 AM I love how this is going! Plus the interior colors would be fantastic body color's. Do 2 tone! I like the idea of a pancake hood too. With what you have done so far, that would fit the build nicely. Excellent work!!!
customline Posted yesterday at 12:07 PM Author Posted yesterday at 12:07 PM Here are some ideas I would like to incorporate into this build (at the moment. 🤔) Skirts. Easy to create. Not sure about this only because it will hide the wheels that I love so much. 🥰 Two things here: side trim -1) a simple sweep in the form and position of the original trim minus the upper segments. 2) eliminate trim between front wheel and parking light. I tried to deal with it but now this mod seems like a good idea. How about the C (B?) pillar on this hardtop? It's subtle but it really speaks to me. Maybe go a bit further? This mod could be part of a very mild chop and elimination of the roof trim to smooth it out. Side trim again, too. This side trim mod appears on more than a few '56s. WDYT? 2

Thanks, Michael, the hood thing is under serious consideration, I would like to avoid it but I can't ignore it. The bright solid green of the interior was originally planned for the exterior. The interior is a done deal. I would like to avoid a two-tone but it's on the table. Note to self - check paint inventory 🤔 1
