Gary Chastain Posted November 24 Author Posted November 24 Some progress today: all tank (fuel and DEF) mounts built, need finish work, straps built. Make up filler necks tomorrow. Partial assembly tomorrow and get ready for primer/paint. Paint will be here Friday. Still waiting on body, suspension parts and one more axle. 9
Gary Chastain Posted November 27 Author Posted November 27 Taking a little time before the turkey, cut apart a heavy kit axle to mimic the white metal axle kit, modifying the parts for an .062 kingpin. Never done this before, so hopefully it doesn’t end up in my box of bad ideas. At least I got to try out my new vise, works pretty good. 7

What kit is the axle you are modifying from? It looks more sturdy than many of the I/24 Italeri kit ones. 1

Was trying to mimic the 24,000 lb axle that would be used under a C500, if I got my facts correct. 3 1

Gary Chastain Posted November 29 Author Posted November 29 Got a front axle built up today with some nicely detailed front brakes. ….But I definitely need some stronger glasses for those two parts that got away. Luckily I had to of those front axle kits, now I got a half a kit left. 2

Ron G OMG are they fiddly but agree on the detail. Now I just gotta wait until those two lost parts show up. 1

Gary Chastain Posted Sunday at 05:55 PM Author Posted Sunday at 05:55 PM I did not realize how challenging it is to build a truck without a boxed kit. I am constantly searching for parts to fit the build and vision. So many little parts we take for granted. My heavy duty fifth wheel setup arrived, found a heavy duty (wide and multi leaf) set of front springs (Autocar dump truck) that fit a straight frame, found a big radiator that fits the grill leaving me enough room for the turbo intercooler. The rest of my axles arrived but my redesigned rear suspension has not yet (on its way) arrived. 3
Gary Chastain Posted Sunday at 07:36 PM Author Posted Sunday at 07:36 PM Most detailed rear suspension I have built. Sanded the air bags to the same height, everything is pinned. I think I will make a fixture to pre assemble each of the three and make sure they are square, a lot of moving parts. my crossmembers will need to support the front to rear track bar, and a second crossmember to support the shocks, repeat this axle to axle. 3
BK9300 Posted Sunday at 10:53 PM Posted Sunday at 10:53 PM No 'paint by numbers' here - will be interesting to see how it all comes together! I've got a suspension like yours, too, so will be watching to see how you make out. 2
Firebuilder Posted Monday at 02:03 PM Posted Monday at 02:03 PM Looks like this is going to be a heavy duty monster! 2

Still not sure if I will use this suspension yet, I have another set coming from 3D concepts that they redesigned to match (spacing and detail stuff) the Kenworth design guide. The package just reached the US customs, so should have it in a couple days. I need to choose the suspension I’m going to use so I can get the frame width numbers and continue building. Just kinda working on odds and ends for now. 3
Gary Chastain Posted Monday at 05:02 PM Author Posted Monday at 05:02 PM Oooohhhhh……nnnoooo, woke up last night and boom….the C500 has a left and right steering boxes. The axle I just built is only left steering, well I have another future use for this axle. Order more steering kits this morning and will start over, first carve out a blank front axle and wait for parts. I could just let it go as the build would represent the idea of the C500 🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️wait ……I could do two steering axles, I have the second set of fenders………….oh stop it, stay on track😂😵💫🤣😍🤪 1 2
Rockford Posted Monday at 07:17 PM Posted Monday at 07:17 PM Have a lie down and then revisit the job. You're hallucinating. 2
Gary Chastain Posted Monday at 09:16 PM Author Posted Monday at 09:16 PM Front axle, take two: I spent all afternoon, going thru all my spare parts and found right side and left side steering boxes, found my last heavy duty axle to build from, ordered two steering kits ( need steering arms on the top side on both sides) found a better set of rims with larger bearing hub with larger lug nut bolt circle to represent the extreme duty of this truck and found tires to fit. will use the dark gray rims and the hub fits the axle, these wheels came with acorn lug nuts. Now I can do the gray rims, black hubs with chrome lug nuts. 2
