Scale-Master Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 As I have said before, this is one of those under appreciated kits. Deemed by many as just as toy or a simplified little fad car, it really does hold it's own with it's contemporaries of the day as far as detail and fit. Built out of the box using good old Testors yellow for the body. I found some photos that showed a few of the called out colors in the instructions to be different, at least as it is now. I did cut some mylar for the mirror face, but that is as for out side of OOB as I went unless you consider the board... The surfboard received some decal graphics I made. The brand of surfboard is fictional, but does have authentic roots. (Care to comment JimDaddy?) The Tiki Hut was a blast to paint, very little in the way of building there. I have wanted one of these kits since it came out, and finally I have one, I recommend and encourage anyone even just thinking of getting/building one to follow through... - Mark WIP Thread: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.p...&hl=Surfite
David@MinidreamsInc. Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 That custom made decal is perfect ! The whole cartoon / custom car fad of the late 60's - 70's don't get the love from many plastic builders ! I have a freind by the name Eric Slaughter who is a hugh collector builder of the customs/toons that is nuts about these kits ! He collect's more then he builders but you should see what he did to the TJ taxi, and to Rommos Rod ! I think you did a cool clean build here ! Thanks for sharing .
Bernard Kron Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 Fabulous! The w.i.p. thread is an absolute must to appreciate what a great little kit this is, as well as the fanrtastic job done on this build. One reason it may be under-appreciated as a kit is because that cool little body hides an incredibly imaginative and nicely detailed chassis which, once the kit is completed, totally disappears! And, at the end of the day, this type of kit only really comes into it's own when it benefits from the superb paint and detailing work seen here. Thanx for sharing!
pstreet Posted August 23, 2009 Posted August 23, 2009 These kits are great fun. As a kid i basically tried to avoid them, but for the past couple of years Ive been trying to get my hands on as many cartoonish/caricature kits as i can. They go together very well and definitely detail out nicely. That surfboard came out fantastic, the pearl looks like a few layers of surf wax.
RodneyBad Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 Great looking Surfite Ya just made this a harder kit to get ones hands on Great looking surf board. Great decal and painting.
jbwelda Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 i always thought the surfite was a super cool little car, with that little austin engine or whatever it is, and the asymetrical styling. back when it was new i thought it cool and i still do today! your build is excellent and makes me want to start one myself! and it also makes me want to pull out that austin motor and use it somewhere like making a bantam roadster back into fairly stock configuration! heres a funny story: back the year before he passed, ed roth was at this car show in oakland california that our club was hosting the model show for. well the real surfite had just been restored and was over in a display on the other side of the hall from big daddys space there. so i asked him about the surfite and he didnt even know it was there and really wanted to go over and see it. he said after he built it, he kept it around for a year or two and then sold it to a guy in LA, an acquaintance of his, who then used it as a everyday vehicle to go to the beach and surf! as i recall he said he did that for a few years and eventually the thing got lost and he didnt even know it had been found. anyway killer build there and like i say, i think i will be rummaging in the closet tonite.
Scale-Master Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 Ironically JB, your's is the last post a couple years ago. But here's a bump for you to see it since I searched it out...
Chuck Most Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Yep, this does it. I'm buying the next Surfite kit I see!
Modellpularn Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Very nice build of this kit! I really like the hut, and the paint/drybrushing you did. Those roof leaves look real! I've got a started one, like soo many others...... I happened to meet Ed Roth at the Oakland Roadster Show in '99. I guess my Surfite should have been finished years ago!
Terry Sumner Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 That's cool! Now ya ought to mount the 2 pieces on a small base with sand!
