dryvr12 Posted September 21, 2009 Author Posted September 21, 2009 Sorry, I mean do you just paint over the chrome, or take it off?

crispy Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 (edited) Depending on the kit, or wheel kit determines how I'm going to do it. I'm with Steve though, if it is a one piece wheel I paint right over the chrome. Otherwise I'll strip the centers on a two piece wheel and paint the color I like. Here are a set of Aoshima wheels I used with Testors Metallizer Exhaust and brush painted: Then we have a two piece wheel that has a separate chrome ring that fits on the outer part of the wheel. I stripped the center and spray painted gloss black: Chris Edited September 21, 2009 by crispy
Joe Handley Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Depends on the finish you want, I shot a set of chrome plated nylon RC truck rims with Pactra Window tint and had it come out better than I expected it to, should be able to do the same with Testors/Model Masters window tint or Tamiya Smoke Black if you're willing to use an airbrush.
CAL Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Thin acrylic black over the chrome. has been fine on my P car.

jbwelda Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 i really like that tamiya smoke job there. let me ask you about the liquid mask, i've got some but havent really tried anything too complicated. when you used it to mask the wheels did you really get it straight when you applied it, or did you go back and trim with an exacto to get a clean separation between the chrome outer and the smoke inner, or, hopefully, does the edge not really show because of all the reflections off the chrome and paint? hopefully you get what i am asking... theres actually a number of really cool wheel treatments here, thanks!
charlie8575 Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 I just did this on the chrome wheels on a 1993 Ranger. I used Testors Pla flat black enamel, stirred very thoroughly. Using a superfine Micro-brush, I barely dipped it in the paint, making the brush load more with tinted thinner than thinner/pigment and gently applied this to the holes in the rims and the center. A small amount of pigment is left at the top, and I used that to deepen the effect a small amount. Where the pigment at the top of the jar is something of a paste, you have far more control over it than a liquid medium. It worked very nicely, my first time trying this. I'm quite pleased. It really was easy...I used a small brush and brushed it where I wanted chrome...as it is blue when wet..just take your time. I used 2 coats and the seperation was perfect...the pictures do not do justice...after the TS smoke dried I lifted it off with tweezers! This will get you to the camaro.... http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.p...mp;#entry203182 Edited September 25, 2009 by MikeMc
CAL Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 that looks nice! thanks. It's one I started years ago and got as far as painting the body Hot Pink, stripping the body, painting the body some funky blue, stripping the body, painting it black. It's been stipped so many times now some the detail got pretty soft. So I thought I just better stick with a color and finish it. Finish last year.
LoneWolf15 Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 How would you black out spokes? wheels? Young Stud , If you are looking to black out Factory wheels , you can always use a Rapidoliner pen. You have much more control with this than a paint brush , The reason I use this method , if I screw it up , I just have to rinse it under cold water and start over again ! Nerve endings are starting to short out in the right hand . To think that I use to paint HO scale figures like they were a dime a dozen , tis hell gettin' old ! The Old Man
crispy Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 I've used the liquid mask one time. I wasn't exceptionally happy about my results, but now do know what to do next time I use it. This is a Revell AG Mercedes 190E kit. I needed to make the outer rim chrome while leaving the inner part white. This was very difficult. The wheels are on the white car. This is how it turned out: I'm happy that the mask works, so I'll be using it again on something else I'm sure. Chris
