Recommended Posts

Marshal, NOT TRYIN ta be rude, but what's this got ta do with model cars??? Maby for a Dio or sumpthin, bit I THOUGHT we weren't gonna have UNRELATED stuff on the forum anymore? At least that's what was agreed on.:lol::lol:

I guess not everyone got the memo...

Yes, we had a vote, and the result was that you guys voted NO to off-topic stuff. That was what the majority wanted, so if we're going to be fair here, we have to go with the majority. So no more O.T. posts please...

The Vote: Yes 13

No 34

Don't care 13

total votes 60

Did not vote, or did not see the post 4,571

Majority rules Hmmmmmm. I think that's how its done in Venezuela

All I can do is leave up to you guys to decide what you want. I can't make anyone vote.

This whole mess started because several people sent me PMs complaining about off-topic stuff. I figured the fairest way to go would be to have you guys vote on whether the off-topic stuff needs to go or not. Like I said, the majority of people who bothered to vote voted NO off-topic stuff.

I'm not a mind reader, so I can't tell you how everyone who didn't vote would have gone... all I can go by is the response that I got. I can't help it if most people didn't vote, that's not my problem.

Like I said, personally I don't have any problem with off-topic posts, in fact I like the off-topic stuff! But I was getting too many complaints via PM... and I really don't have time to go through everyone's posts and decide whether or not it's "off-topic" or not. I'm not Judge Judy. So I put it to a vote and the result was no off-topic posts.

So first I get people complaining about off-topic posts, now I get people complaining about me trying to enforce what you people yourselves told me you wanted!!!

I thought it was no politics and religion. I see nothing wrong with this post.

I thought the same thing; religion and politics. I don't want to see MCM turned into another SA(i.e. somebody getting their boat model post deleted because "it's not a car")...

I posted this because I thought people would like to see some history. I didn't see anything offensive, political, religious, nor argumentative about it. I do apologize if someone does find it offensive, but I fail to see how.

On another note, the apartment is not in the middle of nowhere. I-44 is 1/4 mile south of it, Oklahoma is 2 miles west of it, as is Kansas, Arkansas is 40 miles south of it. And Joplin is a growing city, with 2 Super Wal-Marts, 2 local hobby shops, a Michaels, a 100 store mall and a Hobby Lobby all within 10 minutes drive of the apartment . There are casinos within 20 miles, and Tulsa is about 50 miles away down I-44.

For the record, I agree with you!

But I can already see the complaint PMs coming my way...

Strip clubs? I was trying to keep it family oriented...

WOW! And I thought I got a bad case of home sickness!

I've been to Chicago (or as Kelly Bundy say's: Chick-a-go), I had fun there. I went to the Museum Of Natural History, and walked around for 5 hours inside... Enjoyed every minute! ;)

Thanks Harry... But I do hope that you don't have to deal with a load of PM's. I didn't mean to start a war here...

Don't worry about it. I'll deal with the PMs if they come.

BTW, I think someone mentioned a diorama of the building. That would be pretty cool, especially with some dusty period vehicles parked outside, maybe a cop car or two...

The question was:

Should we add an off-topic area?

Yes, I love a good debate

No, there is no place for it here

Doesn't really matter to me one way or the other

To quote Steve Martin (no relation although my brother sort of resembles him), "Excuuuuuuuse me!"

I think most of us, being typical humans, got the jist of the poll and people's comments and did not read and absorb the precise language of it.

What I have liked about this forum is that people are pretty free to say what they want and nothing gets deleted. It is quite refreshing, actually. You even leave the locked threads in place! I did think that the poll and subsequent comments in that thread indicated people's desires to cease with the politics and religion. If this forum was strictly limited to just model cars I would be quite bored with it.

Since AMT did release a Bonnie and Clyde themed version of the 32 Ford back when the Faye Dunaway/Warren Beatty movie came out I would say this thread is model related!!!

Hey, Ithought it was cool, BUT there WAS a vote, an the MAJORITY said NO OFF TOPIC stuff. Sooo, bein the good Forum member that I TRY to be, I just mentioned it. NOW if were NOT allowed to talk about Religion OR politics, THAT'S cool by me too! I voted I DIDN'T care one way or tother, BUT some folks were SOOOO offended a vote was taken, an NO OFF TOPIC stuff was NOT PERMITTED! Personally I think the Bonnie an Clyde stuff was cool, AND I did mention on how it'da made for a cool diorama, BUT those who voted NO off topic stuff got there way, I jus reminded us'all. If it's gonna be NO RELIGION or POLITICS, then that's OK by me too, BUT the winners GOT what they wanted, which WAS No off topic stuff. Now folks is whinenin! Poor Harry, ya must REALY be goin nuts!!! Go figger???!!!:P;)

And there's the problem.

What is off-topic enough to be "off-topic?"

Are joke threads off-topic? Are links to youtube videos off-topic? What about the economy and getting laid off from work? Is talking about the economy "political?" What about the status of GM and Chrysler? "Political?" Off-topic... or not?

For those members who want this place to be strictly about model cars and nothing else... for those who tell me that this is a place where they want to get away from all the rest of life's topics, and who remind me that there are plenty of other sites available where almost any topic can be discussed, I would have to delete everything that doesn't directly relate to model cars. Like this very thread, for instance.

For those members who do like a little variety, how "off-topic" is too "off-topic?" Do I keep some off-topic stuff going at the risk of alienating other members?

I think the phrase "between a rock and a hard place" applies here. Looks like I'm in a classic "no win situation"...

An Off-topic area would be a good solution, as it wouldn't exclude general interest topics for whomever is interested , but would keep it separate from model related areas. You could call it "The Off-Topic Lounge". Just my two cents.

*blinks* I missed where I could vote..

George  you are just so wonferful in your fairness, how's the Lincoln comin along?

Marshall :P that was a great link, very interesting, I LOVE history! How's the amer Vett comin along?

After reading all of the notes on the subject. Can you make a new pole with it stated more clearly?

I think the off topic are is also a good idea... since most of what I post is off topic LOL

I just so love it here, I love the fact you can disagree and actuall talk about it in a fair way, I love that I can see all these different thoughts with very little off color comments.

Thank you! ;) you all just simply ROCK!

Harry,

I did not intend to disrespect you with my previous response with the vote count post. I merely wanted to state that the vote was not really a majority. with only 60 votes out of over 4,500 members before the decision was made, I felt that it needed more time before the decision was made. I'm sure most members don't have the chance check out the forum on a daily or even a weekly basis, so they might not have even had a chance to vote.

Like you I also enjoy a good debate, (my wife and myself have had plenty LOL).

But to complain about this post is akin to nit-picking.

Religion & politics have probably started every war in the history of the world, so with that said I would agree that these topics should be Taboo here. But this is the GENERAL section and if it werent for the occasional off topic post, I think I would skip this section all together. I mean how many times can you look at a post that asks " how do you get your paint so shiny"

Look at the title page, there is a sentence that says: Our online forum is second to none. we have the best people, best topics, and basically no rules. So please, lets not tie up the forum with so many rules.

I enjoyed seeing this historic old building and it does lend itself to dio builders very well. So I really don't see all the hub-bub about it. Let the forum be what it is, and let the complainers move on.

Respectfully,

Ron
