jjsipes Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Has any else seen this? Revell has partnered with the NHRa to reissue some of its vintage drag racing models. More to come according to article. http://www.nhra.com/story/2009/10/22/revel...ring-nhra-logo/
Dragline Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Believe me when I say that THOUSANDS are looking forward to these releases. Revell Drag kits have always been the best kits. I heard the tooling was done and that a strategic release date was all that remained. Bob F
Jon Cole Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Don't shoot me please for asking this, as I have yet to dive into a funny car build, but isn't at least one of these funnys the same as the Polar Lights offering from 5 to 10 years ago? I thought they did a Hawaiian?
Dragline Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 I have not seen pix of the chassis, but I understand that there are two chassis versions coming out. One will be with the driver in the center as is/was traditional. The other chassis is based on the Chi Town Hustler, which is to say that the drivers is offset to the side a bit so he can see down the side of the hat and blower. This was adopted by quite a few teams of that time period. I'm not certain of the actual chassis maker but I saw a couple of them at the Funny Car Reunion race i went to a few years ago. I thought it odd as I'd never seen it before and talked to the owner where it was explained to me. Revell will do an excellent job you can bet on that. I'm getting a little antsy myself. Bob F
Dragline Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Of course, the hope and expectation, on my part at least, is that Revell will follow up the Chargers with some additional body styles. A '69 Nova and '70 Camaro ( both Jungle) and '69 Camaro (USA-1) are some that would seem like obvious choices to me. I agree, with these chassis the sky's the limit. The Jungle stuff seems a no-brainer as well as the USA-1 car. If not, at least we have resin. But I myself would rather it came all in one package. The future looks bright for nostalgic Drag Racing subjects. Bob F
Casey Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Are these new NHRA-branded kits based on existing Revell tooling, or are they all-new? I recall they released the Blue Max '71+ Mustang F/C and a few others a few years back, but I thought those were based on existing tooling.
Dragline Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 (edited) Nice pix of the Chi Town chassis for those who are looking to accurately build this car. I'm not sure if I'd call those reissues with that tooling "improvements". I dislike 1 piece chassis as they tend to have square [on the inside areas] tubing instead of completely round. I myself would rather build up the chassis like they used to be so I can control certain things [iE: ride height and so forth]. I'm looking forward to seeing new HEMI's however. http://www.moparmax.com/events/2009/iv_7-mosley-1.html Enjoy Bob F Edited November 2, 2009 by Dragline
Harry P. Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 I thought licensing fees had become a killer for racing models. How do these kits get around that?
iBorg Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 I think the one piece chassis was a step backwards. I don't find making it square a problem if you take your time but it isn't for beginning modelers. The tires are wonderful. I do look forward to a new blown hemi. I also second Ken's suggestion of a 69 Nova and a 1971 Camaro. The 69 Camaro would be nice. I'd really like an accurate 1/25 scale Cuda, and a later Duster (although the Revell early one can be modified). I would also like to see Revell correct past sins and issue a correct Mustang. Mike
Dragline Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 I thought licensing fees had become a killer for racing models. How do these kits get around that? Harry, I believe that between the age of the subjects and the NHRA affiliation, Revell was able to go forth with these. I think that NHRA sanctioning covers quite a few things like additional licensing [within reason]. Coupled with the relative age of the subjects and we have NEW kits. If I'm not dead on I'm close I think. Bob F
capsgs Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 These are nostalgia cars, thus no corporate entities to deal with, just the NHRA. I just hope it ends up being a good chassis and engine. There's lots of resin out there to fill the rest of the void. Cap

I cannot speak for the nitpickers of course. LOL Bob F

Fuel Coupe Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 I had posted this same topic over in the general forum here: New Revell Funny Cars But im glad its here too. Im am elated that they are doing this. Revell over the years did MANY funny cars in different dresses. Anyone remember the "All Star Series" that spanned several years covering funny cars as well as dragsters. There were only 6 basic bodies in the series. both 1/16 as well as 1/25th (someone correct me here if Im wrong) In 25th scale A 71-73 vega Later modifed to the 74 on vega. A Demon/Duster body(really no change here just a different grill decal) Monza body And a Charger in 16th scale Early/late Vega body Duster/Demon (same as 25th scale) A Charger A Grand Am I dont remember the monza in 16th scale nor do i remember the grand am in 25th scale Oddly enough no ford bodies at all in either scales. the decal changes and induction changes along with the rear engine swaps from the standard rear and the quick change made it a smart move revell to repack these kits to death ( a good thing for some). then came the more recent ford from revell that I believe is an all new tooling, so It will interesting to see what they do with that one... Harry's comment on licensing bring up some intresting points. I "believe" that with dwindling interest in nascar models, that coupled with the ever rising fees imposed by NASCAR that when Revell pulled out of nascar modeling it freed up some funding to be spent on the ever growing nostalghia drag racing intrests. I may be wrong on the dwindling interest part but Im pretty sure on the rest. I welcome them all and I certainly hope the do extremely well and allows Revell to tool up and sell some other drag kits. Its good to see revell is digging in the way back machine too. IM READY!!!!!
Fuel Coupe Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Shane, there was a Ford body in 1/25th scale ... you forgot the Pinto, which was released as Mickey Thompson's "Revellaser" and Al Hannah's "Eastern Raider." Oddly enough, though, unlike the other kits in the All-Star Series, the Pinto kits utilized the funky chassis that Revell used under its JJ Camaro, as well as its generic Camaro and Mustang F/C. A newly-tooled Pinto body paired with the regular digger chassis would be most welcome. I'd also love to see Revell redo its Mustang F/C body that first saw the light of day in the Blue Max kit. Others have argued the point with me, but I thought that thing was an abomination! HAHA your right, I forgot about the pinto as well as the camaro. I guess I "try" to forget those as the chassis' were completely goofy... Those were some of the very first from the "All Star" series.... Now, Was the mustang ever released as a replica of a real car like the Eastern Raider and the Revellaser as well as the camaro "JJ" car. I don't remember anything like that...
Fuel Coupe Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 (edited) That would be a no. In fact, I don't remember any teams ever running a Mustang Grande F/C body, which was what Revell's kit represented. Like I said earlier, a new Pinto body would be most welcome. And how about a new 'Cuda or Challenger body for the All-Star Series chassis? The former would seem to be a no-brainer to me, as there has never been an accurate second-generation 'Cuda body in 1/25th scale, other than in resin. Revell, how about a kit of the Mazmanian 'Cuda F/C for starters, perhaps? thats what I thought Ken. Before I sold off my collection 10 years ago I had searched hard and had just about every kit from the all star series and there were a few. I would love to see a Ramchargers Cuda or even bring back some more of the oldies like the Castronova custom body Dodge. How about Chuck Tanko's speed equipment world Vega, or the Farconas Coil and Minick Chi Town 73 Charger The options are endless. I would think that Revell is reissuing the older F/C kits in order to finance new toolings of other drag cars. I can dream can't I... Edited November 3, 2009 by TxRat
iBorg Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 My vote is CUDA!!!!! The Jo-han Challenger and Mustang both fit over the Revell chassis pretty well although the tin work does require a whole lot of work. Behind the Cuda, an accurate ram air Mustang would be nice. The Jo-han Challenger body is top notch and with Revell's current pricing structure can often be bought for the same price as a new kit. Also deserving a second look would be an accurate second generation Duster with the smaller greenhouse. As for an Arrow and Mustang II, maybe these would be better molded to fit the Monogram funny cars such as the Trans Ams. That chassis front end seems much closer to what was run in the late 70's than the early 70's Revell chassis. Mike
AK_Invader Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Any word through the grapevine on a release date for these kits?
Casey Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Any word through the grapevine on a release date for these kits? There was no mention of these kits in Revell's Fall 2010 release of a week or so ago.
Casey Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 The fall 2010 releases were new kit announcements. The funny cars weren't on there because they'd already been announced. That is true. What is/are the release dates for the F/C kits, then?
Modelmartin Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 The fall 2010 releases were new kit announcements. The funny cars weren't on there because they'd already been announced. Someone posted a pic awhile back of a built test shot of the Chi-Town Hustler that Revell had on display somewhere ... looked awesome! I saw the test shots on display at NNL Milwaukee in April. The new tools are outstanding. Bill Lastovich was there and told me that management decided to pony up the bucks for a correct all the way through Chi-Town even though it can't be recycled into any other releases! I am impressed that they would do that. The Hawaiian is different enough from the Polar lights to be worthwhile and there will be multiple releases of that tooling eventually. I was never overly impressed with the Polar Lights Hawaiian. It is a good kit but was generic. The body was a styrene copy of the resin Good Stuff body! If you compare the kit to pics of the real thing there are many differences in body, frame, etc. For me it's no big deal. I can make the changes and be pretty happy with it. I just don't think that because PL made one that it negates the Revell-ogram release. I will definitely buy both of them! And I already have the PL kit.
