roadhawg Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 My local club, The Georgia Mountain Modelers, recently had a group build project called "The Georgia Connection".....we could choose any subject we wanted, as long as it had something to do with our home state of Georgia. Since I don't have any road racing cars in my collection, I chose to build the 1993 Hot Wheels Camaro driven by 1992 SCCA Trans Am champion Jack Baldwin, of Marietta Georgia. While our project didn't have any rules as far as detail level, I decided to build mine box stock, to conform to IPMS OOB rules. The only thing that didn't come in the kit, other than paint, are the seat belts made from masking tape, which I understand is legal for OOB. This is really a nice kit. I was intimidated at first, but once all the mold lines and ejection marks are cleaned up, it goes together very well. The only issue I had was the decals....these Revell decals weren't very good to start with, and time had not been kind to them. After a few chipped and broke, I decided to weather the car to look like it just finished a tough race....that might explain the chipped decals. This was a fun build, and building it OOB made me realize I need to work some more on my basic building skills. The best thing is....I actually finished a club project early!
chris coller Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Gotta say the exhaust looks awesome. I have one in the works to finish. I always was a fan of SCCA racing. Always had great looking cars for fans to identify with.
Guest Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Nice save on the decals Tommy, looks good. Are these things at all like NASCAR racers?
Greg Cullinan Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Tommy this looks like a lot of work and effort was put into it. The end result is worth it cause you have a beautiful model.
Matt P Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Tommy, this looks great. I've always wanted to build on of these, so seeing how yours came out, broke the camels back and I'm going shopping! Thanks for the inspiration.
roadhawg Posted December 21, 2009 Author Posted December 21, 2009 Thanks, guys. Yes, these are nice kits, and I might build another soon. The only thing I would do differently is get a set of Slixx decals. Lee...I'm not sure what you mean, but the kit is more like the old Revell ASA kits than a Nascar kit.
miatamadman Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Great job! I built this kit several years ago and the decals were a major pain in the rear. Once the decals were applied to the body, they immediately were stuck. No sliding around. I ended up using three decal sheets.
Nick F40 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Now that is a very well built version. Haven't seen one this nice in a while.. And yes, they are totally different than NASCAR, the cars at least looked like the cars and different engines and the cars weren't as "safe", like a real race car should.
vizio93 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 ...and the cars weren't as "safe", like a real race car should. That's the best part I love the SCCA cars, and you did a great job on this one Tommy.
Guest snapper Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Great job Tommy! You really have an eye for detail, and the weathering looks very natural.
crispy Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Tommy, that weathering really give that car some character! Box stock build? Almost looks detailed! Great job on what looks like an intimidating kit. As mentioned before, I'll have to get one of these! Thanks for sharing! Chris
MikeMc Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 Way over the top...I can still see them coming out of the carousel at Road Amirica sliding and banging over the curb!!!!
Tommy Kortman Posted December 26, 2009 Posted December 26, 2009 Nice Build! I always like that car. Ther weathering is very good too. Good job.
