HotRodaSaurus Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Just read in a newspaper over here Jeremy and the boys may be in their twilight years. Yes the programs producers think the whole program is becoming slightly cartoonish and too much over the top. I do remember the old style Top Gear where family cars and a few exotics were tested, how the show has changed. Personally I do agree that some of the stunts are over the top and to me not worth the effort, blowing up caravans and crashing Morris Marinas should really go staright to a DvD special. I think the program lost the plot when doing the Cross Channel car conversion. The Stigs tests of the supercars are now about the only thing I am usually interested in. Anyone else have any views on this program? I believe you get it in the USA now. John
The Creative Explorer Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I've been watching TopGear ever since the beginning. And until season 10-11 it was just too good. I think the show topped at that point, especially with the occaisional challenges. Now, they try to repeat it too often. They should make it less often. Other than that, the humor is still typical British and they have a very good concept. Is there any other carshow that is watched this good? Just too bad Fifth Gear passed away because of TG. I watched TG for the fun, entertainment and for the exotic cars. Next to that, I watched FG for info and entertainment. Gonna miss Plato and Needell....
vizio93 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I like Top Gear, the humor is hilarious. I've only been watching it for a couple of years though. i have kinda noticed that they are doing more exotics than they used to, but I guess someone has to. I agree some of there stunts are a little over the top, but others are just plain funny. I like it when they buy "normal cars" and put them through funny tests ;)
seeker589 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I didn't find Top Gear until about three years ago. When I did and brought it up to some guys at the plant - they knew about it and soon we had a Top Gear clique at work. "Did you see this....!?" was the lead in phrase of the time. While the testing of exotics is a bit too often - There seems to be a rivalry among exotic manufacturers to build a car for the Top Gear Test Track. I.E. The Koenigsegg CCX wing addition. Since it is one of the - if not THE most watched automotive show on the planet - I can see why being on the top of the test board is so important to them. Like you said - the stunts are a bit nuts - There is only so much you can do with a car. Make it a boat, blow it up, drop it from a crane, drop it from a crane onto a caravan, blow up a building while the vehicle on top of it, play hockey in the snow, play football(soccer) with it in the grass, buy cheap versions of depreciated expensive cars and beat on them until you see them fail, etc. After this many seasons - I think they are running out of ways to destroy cars in creative ways. If it goes, I will miss Clarkson, May and Hammond. They have a comedic timing that is rare with two people - let alone three. I will miss "Star in a reasonably priced car." But the thing I will miss most - Seeing Oliver and twinkle in Hammond's eye when he speaks of it.
crispy Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I thoroughly enjoy the show. Personally I like that it is mostly exotics. I can watch other programs for "regular" cars. I don't get to see too many exotics and seeing them test them and The Stig run the track is my highlight. I also enjoy Star in a reasonably priced car too. As was mentioned the comedic timing and British humor is the best I've seen among the three. I don't think they are too old, at least in their minds eye. I'd hate to see it go as it is the highlight of my Monday nights. Chris
gasman Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I'm a big Top Gear fan and I will be sad too see it go. with that said this has been a very weak season, in fact the last episode was the worst episode of Top Gear I have ever seen. (Clarkson testing the new Noble was pretty good, but the art exhibit stuff was pretty boring.)
LVZ2881 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I started watching it again last year after getting digitial cable with BBC america, and have gotten my dad, mom and 9 yr old daughter watching it now. Its a great show, and I couldnt agree more that the Clarkson, Hammond and Captain Slow just click together more than any other show presenters do. I do agree that they need to test more "normal" cars, but watching reruns on DVR on sundays is a highlight of my week and my dad and I will wait so we can sit and watch them together. I also love the fact that they can get away with more then they could if they were on American network TV.
vizio93 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 But the thing I will miss most - Seeing Oliver and twinkle in Hammond's eye when he speaks of it. Here's a pic of Oliver : It's funny how it won the competition
gasman Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I'm looking foward to this week episode. the Bolivia Special. The gang drives through Bolivia in a Range Rover (has to be Clarksons choice), a Suzuki Sidekick (May's?) and an old Toyota FJ (after seeing pictures of it, it has to be Hammonds)
FordWagonNut Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I have been watching TG for about three years. I discovered it when I was living in the college dorms, been hooked ever since. What I find what pulls me into the show, its how the three interact. You can see how they feed off one another and their humor is magnified by it. I also really like to watch how they take regular cars/trucks and just beat them to a pulp. Its a great show in its own right. It will truly be missed when it ends.
AMT Pacemakers Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Guess I'm the only one who did not care for it!! But the BBCAmerica channel really sucks anyhow, they should call it the Ramsey Nightmare channel. Theres so much good comedy in GB and none of its on BBCA. CCSS

CCSS It's because of all the censor ship here. Look at how the Janet Jackson ordeal got all blown out of proportion. Songs on the radio that were nevere censored are now and it started shortly after the incident. Edited December 22, 2009 by promodmerc
B_rad88 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 well, ever since i first seen top gear, i loved it, its funny, and they do some of the most out-of-this-world stunts! i mean would you take a crack at those stunts? i don't think so. hell, i would love to be on there show and do some of the stuff with them. i would die happy!!!!!!!! LOL but you got to admit top gear is alot better than fifth gear!!!!!!!!! fifth gear really sucks, big time!. the only thing on top gear that gets me a little is all the american bashing jokes they do, other than that, its still a good show! and i will still watch it!

But the BBCAmerica channel really sucks anyhow, they should call it the Ramsey Nightmare channel. Theres so much good comedy in GB and none of its on BBCA. CCSS Ever see the episode where the Top Gear boys hung out with Gordon Ramsey? Captain Slow's "Piece of sh*t" (in Ramsey's words) potato pie beat Ramsey's, and after eating something really gross (I want to say it was sheep testicles, or something,) James May held it down while Ramsey projectile vomited into a bucket! Sounds to me like it should be Captain Slow's Kitchen Nightmares!
