Chuck Most Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Okay- a while back I said that my '94 Ram Puller truck may have been my 'end of the line for '09'. Since that one was completed, I've finished four other builds, so I'll refrain from calling this chocolate colored Comet the last model of '09, since that stupid Jeep rat of may be done tomorrow! Anyway- this is basically the gist- I wondered what might have happened if the Mercury boys had wanted to do their own version of the '66 Fairlane 427. Perhaps Mercury wanted a direct competitor to the GTO, or they'd gotten wind of a certain cartoon-themed Mopar due out for '68. What might such an animal have looked like, if they'd been required to use parts from the previous year's Fairlane 427? Here's my guess... I used the engine from the Fairlane kit, as well as the front and rear bench seats, shifter, wheels (even though the lug nut detail is an afterthought, and hood. The tall and skinny Firestone narrow whites are from the AMT '62 Buick Electra. I wanted a very muted, very earthy hue for the paint- the more I thought about it, the more I liked brown! The Krylon 'Leather' that I used was a bit lighter than I wanted, but I think it came out okay. Best part of the Krylon was I just waxed it to shine up a few rough areas... no clear gloss required at all! Some Photo etched Detail Master hood pins adorn the Fairlane hood, which is about the only tipoff that anything untoward is going on under the hood. A '73 Michigan plate (from the reissued AMT '49 Ford Coupe), brings up the rear.
James Flowers Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I like the color of it.If it had stock hood that would be one heck of a sleeper.
FORDSVTPARTS Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 Nice work! Were you aware that Mercury actually had gone a bit in that direction with the Comet Caliente? I saw one of these for sale in someones front yard about ten years ago, I wish I would have bought it now. That's a stock hood, no big block though. Pretty cool little car.
Chuck Most Posted January 2, 2010 Author Posted January 2, 2010 Steve- Hmmm... take the model king '64 Comet Caliente kit, and the wheels from the AMT '63 Impala, and you could build essentially that same car as a model! I might just have to try it!

Tony T Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 (edited) Very nice "what-if". Kind of reminds me of a small version of Gator McKluskey's car in "White Lightning!". I know that was a 4-door LTD, but was brown, and had black steelies! Edited January 4, 2010 by Tony T
Janne Herajärvi Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 It looks nice with those steelies and unusual color choice. Some cool details there too
FordWagonNut Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 It kind of gives off the vibe "quiet before the storm". I really like it, that brown seems to suit it as well.
Harold Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Very nice job, Chuck. . This thing looks like its ready to take on all comers on Woodward, between 12 and 13 Mile.
bsoder Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 very cool! the black steel wheels and whitewalls are perfect and go very nicely with the brown paint. i can just imagine cracking into all 8 barrels of fun at 40mph and getting sideways. Dave Now that would be FUN!!..specially on those tires B) ..great idea on this
