Here is the 69 convertible camaro I have slowly been working on on the side. I can find the previous post right now, so here is a new one! I have finally decided to try a flame job with my airbrush! Wish me luck!!! I will need it! LOL. I have done the easy part. I started with snow white, then yellow, then ultra orange, then kosmos red. Next will be designing the flames and masking it off. Still debating the main body color? Cant decide metallic blue, pavo purple or a dorado dreams? But, I am this far! Also have to mask off the black chassis and paint the frame rails and tank silver to finish that off. Thanks. Jody

Alright, I downloaded a side view drawing of one of these, resized it to about the right size. Then I drew some flamage. I cut it out and traced it onto tape and cut it out! I am sure glad I traded one of those ole kits for the swivel knife and paint and such! That knife works very well for this! After placeing the tape on the body and such. I was ready to paint my silver onto the car. But as I was getting ready to pour the silver, a thought came to my mind. I am really wanting a white interior. Well, black goes with silver in my opinion. so I closed up the jar and poured some pavo purple instead. I am glad I did as it really makes the flames POP!! Not the greatest job, but for my first multi color paint job and my first masking job and my first flame job. I think it looks really cool! Now I cant wait to finish this girl up!! Let it dry for a couple of days and rub the body out. Place some decals on it then clear it! Mean time, I will start on the interior and try to finish the chassis. This has me interested in finishing so far at this point! Jody

No. See, I had heard of a trick to put BMF on first, then paint. Then softly sand the paint away to show the BMF. So I figured I would try that trick using silver sharpie. However, I had no luck. So therefore, I know better then to try it with BMF. LOL. Thanks. Jody

Jody, your not supposed to SAND over the script....been there, done thathuh.gif

take a 1/4" square dowel of BALSA wood....a drop of thinner soaked in....gently rub

and if you burnished right the script or emblem will pop!!cool.gif

Sweet flames!!!!

Looking good - I was wondering what you were doing with the fade - then the flame mask showed up - very nice.

Remember - the NHRA and the IHRA have stricter roll-bar and roll-cage requirements for Convertables - pretty much if the car goes less than 13.99 in the quarter - it has to have a full cage and five point harness. I would think that a car of this class or speed would be going at least in the low elevens to high tens - therefore a cage would be required. Check with some rollbar/rollcage vendors for ideas on 1:1 scale examples. S&W, Alston and Ed Quay come to mind - there are others.

Jody she's looking fantastic. Hard to believe this was your first attempt. The way you layed it out is very cool. And I know I appreciate the step by step layout. Also a very nice ride and I'm digging the hood. All that show your gonna need alot of GO;). Do you have a 454 laying around for her? Thanks

Its the pace car kit, so I believe that had the stock 396 in it? Thats what I will be putting in it. I also believe those ran 12's back then? So I think it would have been a roll bar with a front support? I do have to check some photos on that. I have to see what Ray Allen had in his briggs Chevrolet 70 Chevelle as that was just about the fasted convertible that ever blazed down the track! Jody

Super Stock cars were about 1 to 2 seconds faster then their stock counterparts. there were quite a few Modifications allowed in Super Stock. Heck - today - "stock" class Hemi Darts are running in the low 9s and well into the 8s. Those cars ran 11s in true STOCK form from the dealership.

The scoop would date the model late 80s and early 90s. I'm not sure when the NHRA changed the Convertible cage rules. They changed them to one second slower in the last ten years or so.

These are currently available rollcage and rollbar kits form S&W:

Hope this helps.

I have to ask - Does anyone else enjoy reading rulebooks? I like finding rulebooks online and printing them out just to find a hole or to plan a build and what I have to change on a 1:1 car or a 1/25 kit.

Well, I am not sure about the hood scoop. To be honest, dont care. LOL. This builds a fun one. Hope to have it built here within another wek. Just need to get out of my slump. As for the roll cage, I was thinking something along the lines of the top one. Now, Im more into the drag scene for the 60's and know that the super stocks were only slightly changes stock cars then. Once we hit the seventies on, I have no clue about regulations etc. LOL. This kit was one a friends gave me as he stole the decals. I had a few in front of it, but it looked like a fun one to build and again, Ive been in a modeling slump, so I tore into it. its been a week and I am flying through it! LOL. Having that fun I was wanting! LOL. As for rule books, I do need to find some for the 60's so I have something on hand to refer to!! Thanks. Jody

Enjoy your build! I'm also trying to get out of a 18 year break. I'm trying to build a '69 Coronet - but keep finding things I would like to change - I just wanna get it done and put it on the shelf and enjoy it - but I keep wanting to add or change this or that - thinking if I built this car in 1:1 scale -what would I do?.

Model building is about fun - glad you are having it! It really does look good!
