Duntov Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Oldschool: I am not familiar with this kit but a couple of ideas. On the firewall you are on the right track....fit / cut / fit etc sheet styrene to make a firewall cover. Maybe add a few parts box appliances to give it some definition. As for the dash and windshield fit.....that's a bit tougher. You might try lowering the entire dash unit by notching out the sides of interior so the dash sits lower on the door panel sides and mates up to the glass "better"....I would not grind on either the glass or dash top. Technically they should "match" each other so grinding on either one is a dicey deal......hence the idea to "lower" the dash in its position in the interior tub so it mates up as intended. Any way that's my two cents...... Regards Bill (Duntov)
oldscool Posted March 31, 2010 Author Posted March 31, 2010 Well, I overcame the fit problem by trimming a little off the front edge of the dash and removing and sanding on the windshield. Now there's a slight gap at the top of the windshield but I can live with it. So this is where things are at now. Almost a complete mockup. I'll wait till last to attach the front suspension as it looks pretty fragile and I may change the wheel color yet. I'm going to scratch a radiator hose and cap as well as a cap for the Moon tank. I promise I will paint the side trim before I'm done. And I'm going to go with a black hood. The pics now show the look I'm going for.
jedimastergary Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Glad to hear you stuck with it and are going to finish this one Was digging in box looking for a 53 I have in parts for another project and found that i have the same kit waiting to be finished painted seats and the interior and had to put it away for a move now might get it out and work on it before to long. Built one once and yeah the front axle is kind of weak it kept falling off while I worked on kit so left it off till end.
Duntov Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 BTW: Normally, carbs are mounted with the primary / secondaries fore and aft. ....the throttle linkage goes down the left (driver side) and the choke on the right (passenger side). Regards Bill (Duntov)
Kenny Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I knew you could do it! That thing is looking pretty tough.
brett Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Glad you stuck with it oldscool, I actually pulled mine out of the cabinet to see if it had the same issues (built it over 25 yrs ago, one of my first. Only things painted was the motor and box, badly at that lol). Glass and dash fit sems okay but the firewall has a couple mm gap right across the top. Never had a problem with the front end with over 20 house moves and various cabinet moves, must be that old glue lol. Have to get me another and try again me thinks. Anyway looking good, kep at it we'll be watching
Duntov Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 OOOPS.........don't I feel like the village idiot!!!!!! The carbs ARE SIDEWAYS on blower.....sorry for the misinformation.... Bill
oldscool Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 Actually Bill, they could be mounted either way. oldscool
oldscool Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 A solution to the firewall issue came my way sort of by accident. I bought the new California Wheels release of the 57 Belair and it just happens to include a complete sprue from the 55/56 Chevy kits which contains the firewall that won't be used on the 57. As soon as I saw it I knew I had what I needed. I can't use the entire part without cutting the front of the interior bucket away as it won't fit flush over the existing firewall so... this is what I did: After I fill the hinge slots it will cover all of the gap but the part at the top of the concave area as well as add some detail. This will work well enough to satisfy me. While I'm posting pics, here is one of the painted side trim. I actually masked this with Tamiya tape: She will be done in no time now. oldscool
jedimastergary Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 looks great nice detail I dug my kit out and just need to find a motor not liking how the stock one looks or fits into the kit to small. Have a couple old drag race motors some where might try one to see what it looks like
kasteer Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Super NICE! I love the look and you're doing a great job with the detail!
oldscool Posted April 7, 2010 Author Posted April 7, 2010 Thanks for the tip Dave. Since I will be using Acrylic semi - gloss black, I may be able to use alcohol rather than thinner. It scares me to put thinner on a finished part. I now have the body and chassis permanently glued together and the firewall done. It's not contest winning work but it looks a lot better than the big gap. Assembled the front suspension and it's a lot sturdier than I thought it would be. Now in the process of painting whitewalls on the front tires. Will try to have more pics tomorrow. oldscool
Pete L. Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 That's going to be neat when it's finished, I like the exhaust tips too, but maybe do them in a matching flat white or some kind of "bare metal" finish ANybody else think that could be slightly modified for a reissue with either more 60's era appropriate or a more "Modern" Rat Rod/vintage "looking" rolling stock instead of the 70's era stuff Joe, I think Monogram should back date several of their kits, Little "T" for one as well as the Little Duece, I'm sure you guys could come up with some more.
oldscool Posted April 9, 2010 Author Posted April 9, 2010 She's getting close to being finished now. Added whitewalls to the front and decided to keep the black wheels. Got all the body trim painted and will admit I have done better at painting trim. Still painting the hood and scoop. The hood will be flat black with an aluminum scoop to look like a home made sheet metal scoop. A cloud came over right when I snapped the second pic so I used the quick fix tool in my Dell image editor to lighten it up and it made the color a little off. Actually, it looks better And here is a sneak peek of where I'm going with the Monogram 56 Chevy.
Railfreak78 Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 Holy Bright Batman! I like it though and certainly am not complaining!
Scalper Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 I like that green paint.nice job I sprayed a 87 t-bird with that paint my next project. great product.
jedimastergary Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 That gereen is great what color is it? I think it would be good on a few kits I have love how it is coming along
oldscool Posted April 10, 2010 Author Posted April 10, 2010 Hi Gary, that's Testors Lime Ice one shot laquer. I love this paint although it does take 2 coats no matter if it is called one shot. oldscool
oldscool Posted April 14, 2010 Author Posted April 14, 2010 (edited) Here are the last WIP pics before she goes to Under Glass. Got the hood and scoop done. The scoop is supposed to look like a homemade tin one that is pop riveted on. Here's a look at my cobbled together firewall which isn't great but it looks better than what I started with. Still needs a master cylinder. Next one is a little out of focus but the chrome ladder bars show up nicely. I wanted to leave a little chrome on the chassis so the bottom wouldn't appear all black. Noticed that all my other pics are of the drivers side so I took pics of the other side this time just to show that I'm not hiding anything. Now on to the Shelby and 50 Ford pickup. oldscool Edited April 14, 2010 by oldscool
Pete L. Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Really nice job on the '55...captured the look of the local hero's ride !
jedimastergary Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Looking good found out the one I have is almost done just need to find where I stashed the motor while cleaning my house. I almost got that color last weekend for my challenger model darn and it looks better in sunlight than the store paint display they had.
rustybill1960 Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 (edited) nice follow through with the WIP the '56 looks super too! Thanks for the ride! GREAT LOOKING BUILD MAN! Edited April 29, 2010 by rustybill1960
