Blake Rogers Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Cranky, do you see a shrink regular like? MAN, that is some twisted stuff!!!!! I'm a HUGE Giger fan [Have an original coffee table version of Necronomicon in my collection]. His designs are erotic, sublime, mechanical, disgusting, and always outright shocking. Without going overboard, you have captured some of what H.R. Giger is all about. Crazy skills. Bob bob i too am a huge fan of his i plan on getting his art work tattooed on me
Dr. Cranky Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 Thanks, maties . . . I shot some kandy a minute ago and I think I got just the right look, that Geiger type of darkness . . . I hope . . . stay tuned in for progress pics . . . tomorrow I shoot some flakes and then clear these suckers. Then is off to build the rest of the model!
Dr. Cranky Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 All right, chaps . . . I shot some of the kandy just to get the right Giger look and feel (that purple/sepia look of his paintings!): I think I gotta shoot the white highlights for the smoke again!
Mooneyzs Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Yeah, buddy, the intercoat clear works beautifully to seal in different coats, and it is extremely tape friendly! Thanks for all the comments. Now I have to figure out how and where I'm going to lay down the kandies. As much as I want to make these two monochromatic, I still want to add a little bit of color to it. Thanks Cranky....sounds like I am going to have to get some of that intercoat clear, that is great to hear that it is tape friendly. just as others said, you sure have some painting skills but you are right about the more you paint and practice the better you get at it.
Dragline Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I want one!!!!!!!! Moparfan, you have excellent taste. Giger isn't for everyone that's for sure. But these cars would make a nice introduction to his work. The Kandy cut the brightness of the masked areas a bit and it really works nicely. Bob
Dr. Cranky Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 Thanks, Bob. Yes, that's the idea to bring down those mask lines and tone them down so that everything looks in harmony. I think once I clear these two, they will pop. Stay tuned in for more progress . . .
crazyjim Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Yo Cranky - is this "intercoat clear" some special clear coat used to seal the tape or just clear like you'd use as a final coat.
Dr. Cranky Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 Jim, SG-100 by HOK is an "intercoat" clear that is mostly used to seal in graphics and kandies between coats. I think of it as an insurance policy on every step of the painting process . . . for example with the water drop F/X, you want to use intercoat clear to seal in the paint after the water evaporates. This is a perfect clear for the job, although I use DuPont spot clear in rattlecan for to do the final clearing and buffing.
hemithunder Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 ...throws away all painting paraphernalia.. and decides that after seeing your other work and this... yes I hate you! These are absolutely friggin amazing!!!
MikeMc Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Virgil I noticed your SG100 is not black gold but TCP.....what gives.....is this 2 part or uerathane reduced with lacquer??
Dr. Cranky Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 Good observation. I get my HOK stuff from either TCP or even better www.coastairbrush.com. Yes, you can get your clear in small quantaties and it already comes reduced, though I sometimes put a bit more reducer in there to make it flow better. Coast Airbrush sells the paint in either 2oz or 4oz bottles, and they have color kits too!
Dr. Cranky Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 Oh, another thing is I am using medium temp reducer which seems to be the perfect match for all this Florida humidity. If I were working with marbelizers, then I use a slow temp reducer . . .
Tony T Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Fantastic paint work on both of those! Love where you got the inspiration, and that you can put it down onto a pair of Mercs! Wild!
pharr7226 Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 This is stunning work! Thanks for sharing your technique with us.
Dr. Cranky Posted March 16, 2010 Author Posted March 16, 2010 Thanks, chaps. The kandies I used are HOK, premixed and ready to be airbrush. You can get different kits from www.coastairbrush.com. Great stuff, and good results every time.
Terror Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Giger my eye!These are Crankyfied.As always,outstanding paint work,and we thought all you did was rust?glad I saw these,man.Thanks
Dr. Cranky Posted March 16, 2010 Author Posted March 16, 2010 Thanks, chap. Oh man, it's killing me having to primer and paint parts for two vehicles instead of one. But I will survive, it simply means the eye candy will be delayed for bit . . . as I work through getting all the parts finished so that I can begin assembly. Stay tuned in!
Alyn Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Virgil, you're outrageous. I love how you sometimes build in pairs. Most of us have probably had alternating concepts of how to build a model, but end up picking one and running with it. You on the other hand, come up with two ideas and build them both. Your paintwork is beautiful and really captures the Giger style.
