Porky Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 (edited) Hey Guys - This is what I have on the bench now, its a club build. Charlie Hill's Filthy Forty Willys, 283 cu. in. chevy, port fuel injected, quick change rear end with wide 5 wheels. Had a hard time getting the stance right, ended up puttin 37' chevy springs under the front and I think that got it about right. Just got the engine finished tonight and started reworking the grill. Let me know what yall think. Edited March 15, 2010 by Porky
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I like it. I'd leave the grill open, and add a moon tank.
Guest Gramps-xrds Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Looks good so far. Is it a resin body or did ya redo the grill. I kinda like the 40 grills better.
Porky Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 Looks good so far. Is it a resin body or did ya redo the grill. I kinda like the 40 grills better. It is the revell kit body, I reshaped the grill opening and added the center bar. Tryin to figure out now how to make the grills
Porky Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 I like it. I'd leave the grill open, and add a moon tank. Hey Kevin, It will have a moon tank sitting right behind the grill opening for sure, might end up leavin' the grill open or just usein some type of screen in them as I have not come up with a way that looks good enough to suit me to make the factory grill inserts for it yet.
Raul_Perez Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 That looks like a GREAT start to a really cool gasser!! The stance is right on the money!! Later,
catpack68 Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 looking good eric!!! i've been thinking about doing that same car.i'm looking foward to seeing how you are going to do the 40 willys grill.
Porky Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 looking good eric!!! i've been thinking about doing that same car.i'm looking foward to seeing how you are going to do the 40 willys grill. Hey Scott, Thanks for the good words on the Willys, Still scratchin' my butt as to how to make those grills, tried a couple diff things but nothing has looked right yet. The leave it open idea somebody said is soundin' pretty good right now
Porky Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 very cool project and a very cool 1:1 car as well. nice job on the stance, especially the rear tucked up close to the fenders Altered States resin has the body with the same grilles. not sure if they will sell just the grille pieces, but it never hurts to ask. Dave Hey Dave, Thanks for the good words on the Willys, Tryin' to git her done for the club meeting tuesday night. It's gona be close
Porky Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 (edited) That looks like a GREAT start to a really cool gasser!! The stance is right on the money!! Later, Hey Paul, Thanks for the comment on the stance of the car, the rear was pretty easy, just fit the quick change rear housing to the kit parts. The front a bit harder to figure out. I glued the kit leaf springs to the frame, the cut out the springs leavin' the mounts / hangers and then fit a pair of leafs out of a 37' chevy kit to the hangers. It came out right on what I was looking for. Edited March 14, 2010 by Porky
Old Gasser Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Looks good,I like the split grill & for that car is correct. It would be nice if Revell could change the front on their current Willys & make the split grill for that year along with the chrome on the hood. They make alot of after market decals for Willys gasser with the splite grill. James
W-409 Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 That's a good start! Chevy 283 is a good choice (not allways Hemi). Love these gassers, keep us posted!
Porky Posted March 15, 2010 Author Posted March 15, 2010 Hey Guys, Thanks for all the good words on the gasser. Got a bit more done on it today, tonight, this morning Chassis is pretty much completed except for gluein' on the rear bumper, the one that came in the kit is not correct for the 1:1 car but it may get stuck on anyway not sure yet. Interior tub is done. Body has 3 coats of Dupli-Color Hot Rod Gray Primer and a couple light coats of clear after I lay the decals on it I will dull coat it. All the chrome has been dull coated, did'nt want anything too flashy on this one. About all that is left are the decals, dull coat and final assembly of the body, lights, glass etc. - Any comments are always welcome and Thanks for takin' a gander at the Filthy Forty
noname Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Great subject matter. I think I've only seen this done one other time. Are you going to build it in it's clean state? You do know why they called it the "Filthy Fourty" don't you?

You do know why they called it the "Filthy Fourty" don't you? For now it will be clean but I do know why it was the filthy forty, I have never tried dirtyin' up anything but maybe I can give it a shot on this one a little later on or Maybe I could ship it off to ole Cranky and get him to put his touch on it, he is the best that I have ever saw at that type of work. His work is simply amazing !!!
Jason Vandergriff Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 That thing looks good Porky. Loving the 283 detail.

His work is simply amazing !!! You can learn how to weather yourself Porky. It's not hard, you just need a little practice. There is lots of information out there on using salt, hairspray, pigments, airbrush, pastels etc, etc. I would suggest taking a couple of your least favorite kits and making some beaters out of them. As far as the Filthy Fourty goes, it was quite dirty but it wasn't rotten and whatnot.

Thanks for the input on the weathering, I have been reading up on it and checking out some of the post here on the subject. When I get it figured out I might dirty up the willys a bit, most of the pics I have found of the car had right much red mud around the bottom edge and on the tires, have found a couple places where they said they would park the car out in the mud if they could find any to keep the people away from it, other racers from looking under the hood and to keep the fans from pesterin' them. I have "rusted out" one of my resin 64' falcon bodies to do an old junk gasser out of and try out the weathering on. Figured it would not be a great loss to screw one of those up. Porky Posted March 16, 2010 Author Posted March 16, 2010 the only issue you may have if you decide to weather it is that most people won't understand it or will think it's a rat rod. the real car was dirty all the time and that's part of it's "coolness" and history, but unless you are into old gassers you wouldn't know that. Dave Hey Dave, I think you hit the mail right on the head and I really dont want this car looked at as a rat rod. For now and maybe always I think she will be clean, it is decaled as the first car they ran before S&S got on board so it must have been clean one time maybe only one time
rustybill1960 Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 That is a very nice build there Man! Larry Davis' book "Gasser Wars" has both black and white and color photos, for your decal work on the car. It even tells why it was called the "Filthy Forty" Nice build can't wait to see it finished Thank You for sharing Later Russ
rustybill1960 Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Just had a thought on the grille, maybe a reworked '41 Plymouth grille? Later Russ
Porky Posted March 16, 2010 Author Posted March 16, 2010 what revell kit is that??????? Hey Blake It's the Stone, Woods & Cook kit. One of the later issues " Motor Sports"
