W117monte Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Could you explain why you are calling the one "Phantom Bee"? The cars look great by the way. the leaf springs are awesome!
Guest Sickfish Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 Thanks Monte! Mate I'm calling the White 'Bee a " Phantom" because of it's colour combination. 70 Superbee's never came or rather, could not be ordered with a red vinyl roof & the only C-stripes avail' were black or white, not avail' in red. The reason I'm building it is because after seeing pics of it, the phantom, I just had to because it looks so ###### good & should've been optioned this way. Cheers, Cliffo.
Guest Sickfish Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 Here's the latest.. Sanded off the molded on metal strapping on the gas tank & fabricated some realistic ones with some thin metal sheeting... Hope you like 'em Cheers Cliffo ;-)
Peter Lombardo Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 This is some really nice work. It is a shame you have to invest so much money these days to buy all of the aftermarket parts. It is insane. You are doing a great job on the chassis here...very realistic. I am impressed. I love the detail you are putting into the under side of the hood. I will watch this all the way through. I can also attest to how nice the spray adhesive works. I use it at work all the time and tried it and it works great as the vinyl roof material.
Guest Sickfish Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 Peter, thankyou very much, it's very kind of you to say you're impressed! To be honest I'm actually impressed myself, Lol! I know that there are many, many builders out there who are much, much more impressive than I am & who really impress me. They spend countless hundreds of hours on their builds & show immense dedication to this craft/hobby & inspires guys like me to push our regular building style boundaries. For them I am trully grateful, especially when they dedicate even more time to post their wips on boards/sites like these :-) Yes it is a shame that guys down here in Aus' spend woefully large sums of $$ on a hobby like model cars, specifically for aftermarket parts & kits, when compared to what you guys pay Stateside...but what other options do we have when the modelling scene & aftermarket product scene is virtually non-exsistent down here?? It's the main reason as to why I've never really done a detailed build, like these 'Bees, previously. I decided to now because I had the $$ & there's now more aftermarket companies to choose from, offering vast amounts of different products, to actually build detailed models. In saying all this I'm not the fastest builder out there & I have learned over the years, that patience has it's own rewards... Cheers & thankyou all for stopping by & inspiring me on these 'Beez Cliffo :-)
whale392 Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) Well Cliff, as to your spending.......I was looking at some kits in Oz, but when I saw the shipping on them I ordered them straight from Japan for just a tad more kit cost but 1/4 the shipping! You do have some companies that produce wonderful goods (wheels for one, turbos for another), but when you look at their prices for goods and shipping when compared to a similar Japanese company, Oz becomes expensive (that is for us stateside). Perhaps a business avenue/idea (not knowing Oz's rules may make this unfeasable) for you would be to hook up with some of us Statesiders and start your own importing/distribution business for model supplies. Is there a big enough call for such? Your 'Bee builds look killer, and the Air Grabber is awesome to say the least. I have this thread marked (or at least actively view it) for inspiration and ideas for my 'Bee build. Thank you for the updates (both here and at the 'other' site on them. Guest Sickfish Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 Brad I haven't bought an over-the-counter kit in over 3-4yrs, simply because either the retailer is greedy or the shipping/handling is more for buying in bulk, rather than smaller quantities??? Which is highly unlikely!! I thought about buying extra ( aftermarket stuff) & then selling them on but I just don't have the time to do it, nor do I think there's a big enough demand with car- modellers, down here, particularily when they probably do what I've been doing, getting stuff off the 'Net. As far as the air-grabber goes I'm also going to source some real rubber to replicate the rubber seal for it... What I'm having a problem/technical dilemma with is the actual air-filter's meshing, the area surrounding the filter??? Anyone got any ideas as to how best to replicate that?? Glad you're getting ideas for you SRT Bee Brad! :-) if you need any parts, that I might have in my spares stash, let me know mate?? Cheers Cliffo :-)
whale392 Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 Will do Cliff. As to your rubber situation; have you thought about stripping wire and using the case (the part you stripped off) as the rubber seal? Or maybe some black RTV molded and cut to shape? Just some thoughts Cliff. As to the mesh itself for the filter..........womens pantyhose? We have some clay shaping mesh here in the states that is VERY close in size and shape to the mesh used in the paper element filters. Perhaps I could send you some if you can't find any locally. Brad
rustybill1960 Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 YEAH!!!! Hey Cliff!! Mate, good to see your on Man! Lovin' the Build! AAAWESOME!!!! What is your favorite brew? Well, have one on me! The Build is KILLER Mate!!! Seriously Dude, let me know how much, I will send you the money! Well, after me and the wifey get back from the cruise to Bermuda! Check out my '70 Bee in the "Under Glass" section. Let Me know! Later Russ
Guest Sickfish Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 That's a good idea about the womens pantyhose Brad, never thought of that! I'll have to get one of my "girl" mates to get some for me or throw me one of their old one's.. Lol! As for the seal I had a better idea, but along the same as your's though. I'm was down @ the local hardware store & came across those special " sparkie" screw-drivers, the ones with the rubber tube sealing along the length of the shaft?? To protect against electrocution?? The rubber used for that is quite soft & more agreeable to re-form ;-) Rusty... You're as mad as a cut snake but a top bloke in my book!! Mate stuff Bermuda, come on down to "Beermuda" Sydney!! We'll catch a real game of footy & all the Aussie beer you can drink is on this "Drink-like-a-fish" Sickfish!! Lol!! Loved your 'Bee mate!! Cheers Cliffo ;-):-)
whale392 Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 That's what I'm here for Cliff....................can't build a model for nothin' but I can dole out advice that actually works! Maybe I'll make it down under one day and look you up.
Guest Sickfish Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Lol! You're welcome anytime Brad ;-) Spent nearly 2hrs workin on detailing the radiator support surround & the hood's latch section! On the fourth attempt I think it's close enough... What do you guys think?? Still gotta make another one & finish up the rest of the detailing on the support... :-( ;-) Cheers Cliffo :-)
whale392 Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Very nice Cliff...........just remember that the full-sized Mopars with Big-Blocks and Hemis had the 26" radiator opening in the core support versus the 20" that the small-block/6cyl cars came with (don't worry Cliff........the kit already has it, I measured before I posted!). Also, on the Hemicar ONLY, the K-Member had a skidplate welded to its leading edge and is very noticable in scale (something the kit doesn't have).
Guest Sickfish Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Here's a pic of both of them finished this morning before heading off to the gym... Thanks Brad... Will be referring to all the detailed pics of engine etc when I finally get around to them ;-) Cheers Cliffo :-)
whale392 Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 I was thinking you guys were WAY ahead of us time-wise. Good build as always (and I am secretly eyeballing the details to help complete,...ok....to detail, a build I will probably never finish).
Modlbldr Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Cliff- Your builds are looking great. Love all of the details. As to the question of a material for the filter, check out the picture I included and tell me if you think it would work. I don't know what it is, but it comes in a small sheet. The piece that I have left is about 3 inches square and is tan in color.(I painted the one in the pic with flat black spray) I don't know how long that it would take to send it to you, but if you thought that it would work, it's yours. Let me know. Later-
Guest Sickfish Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Go right ahead Brad, hopefully it'll help you to get your build finished, maybe even before I finish theez 'Beez! ;-) Mdlbldr... I actually just went through my supply cabinet & found out I have some Detail Master under hood material, which I think will pass for the air-filter surround. But thankyou for your kind offer mate :-) Cheers Cliffo :-)
Modlbldr Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Cliff- Sounds fine. I just got home last night from being out of town for a week and I just found a letter from my friend in Colorado. He sent me 5 more pieces of the material which he says is a sports wrap tape that the high school football players use to wrap their wrists. It is very thin and spongy and comes in rolls that are about 2 inches wide. Should be able to pick it up at sports supply stores or perhaps pharmacies or drug stores. I sprayed mine with flat black paint and applied it with white glue. I can't wait to see the phantom Bee done. I saw that ref. picture quite a while ago and was blown away by that color combo. Cliff- Thanks for the info on the spray adhesive. I'm going to see if I can find some tomorrow. Later-
rustybill1960 Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 (edited) Ay Mate! Your details are spot on! Got another Bee for ya ta eyeball!! Take a breather and another brew!!! '69 Super Bee in the "Under Glass" Later Russ Edited March 30, 2010 by rustybill1960

Got my Keith Marks decals & Scale Hardware items in the mail today!! Here's the air grabber finished & ready for paint next the engine bay... All molded-in wiring sanded off & ready for real wire... new correct rear 1/4 panel lines done... more coming.... Edited March 31, 2010 by Sickfish
Deckerz Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Im really digging these builds, i might have to pick-up one of these 70 kits myself, i love working on superbees dunno why but the kit i enjoyed building most was a revell 69 bee. I might have missed it from a previous post but what colours are you painting them?
Guest Sickfish Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 (edited) Here's the sub-frame assembly with correct drainage/wiring holes, ready for paint... here's the top of the grill, working on fine tuning it with the hood latching etc Deckerz, the Hemi 'Bee will be K-5 dark burnt orange & the Phantom 'Bee will be white. You can check out the real 1:1s on the first page of this thread Cheers Cliffo :-) Edited March 31, 2010 by Sickfish
Guest Sickfish Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 (edited) Ok here's the Keith Marks decal sheet with the red C-stripes for the Phantom Bee! Also I found a nice Matt red by testors, that closely matches the red vinyl roof of the Phantom. I also tested it, properly on a spare body. It has 2 coats of the 3M adhesive spray, 1 full good coat of testors Matt red & 2 coats of semi-gloss. Seems to have done the job? Cheers Cliffo :-) Edited March 31, 2010 by Sickfish
nails3825 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 That's going to look sweet! You're putting tons of detail into these builds... can't wait to see them finished I noticed the vinyl top "seam lines" are gone... were they covered and hidden with all the coats of paint/adhesive or did you remove them? I'm planning to give this 'cuda a white vinyl top, just wondering if there was a trick you had in mind.
