tuffone20 Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Ok am I missing something here? Anyone know what make this guy think this kit is worth the $300 he is asking for it? I just picked up a sealed one for $40 a while back. http://cgi.ebay.com/POLICE-PURSUIT-CAR-BY-JOHAN-LIMITED-1-OF-3000-MINT_W0QQitemZ110440780538QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item19b6c892fa
charlie8575 Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 From what I understand, they're a bit scarce now, but they are out there. $300 is idiotic. Hope he enjoys looking at it on the shelf. From what I understand, should Okey ever actually get Jo-Han back up and running at full speed, this may not be among them as the molds were either stolen, damaged or sold by SeVille, which is a real shame. I have one of these kits and it's a nice kit. I'll probably end up doing a non-police Fury I. Charlie Larkin
george 53 Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Hey, I got an ORIGINAL ,sealed kit, with a 1.78 pricetag from Federals Dept.Stores But as crazy as I am,I'd NEVER even TRY ta ask 300.00 bucks for it. An THIS clown wants 300 bucks for a REISSUE??? I got at least 2 more REissues that I DIDN'T pay more than 10 bucks for! I know they're reissues cas one came with GREEN tinted glass, and the others molded in blue! THIS guy IS nuts!!!
Eshaver Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 (edited) It's not just this car, it seems to be prevelent within the hobby or should I say profession of "Yuppie Speculators " who grab something and hoard it unti they think they can finance a retirement on something . Ive gone to too mamy shows and laughed at these poor miserable creatures sitting there slobberly taking up room on the vendor foor trying to pawn off their wares as EXTREMELY RARE an Highly sought after artifacts ! Give me a break children .I build old kits , GASP !!!!!!!!! I bought a 61 Buick Special wagon and yep , I built it using some genuine G M laquer on it too ! So what , I was able to work this clown to a reasonabe figgure so I bought it too . As for ths seller on Evil Bay , I hope he espouses a Meuseuem for his collection one of these days ! RodBurNeR Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 That's a $45 kit at the most I think. If you think that's bad, look at the others on ebay for $400 and higher! I don't know who these guys are, but it's just irritating to even see those prices. If you browse enough you will see some glue bombs for 200bucks. Above the ordinary prices on model kits is not much different from seeing those stupid prices at the gas pumps...someone is getting a good deal, and it's not you. Either the seller paid way too much for them or they are looking at "price guides".

They weren't all that popular as model kits then, mostly given their 4dr body style, so it's very possible to find them even today, although they aren't on every streetcorner. Many may not recall, but about the time that JoHan started this series of reissues, Walmart, then a chain of small town discount department stores (their move to the big cities was yet to come) carried massive stocks of JoHan kits--the '68 Plymouth police car among them. Walmart, even then, would have accounted for a minimum of 20,000 or so kits, just to stock their stores that existed at the time, and they had them on the shelves in half dozens to full cases back then. Like so many other discontinued model car kits, once the kit goes away from the mfr's lineup, eBay charlatans proclaim it to be "RARE!" whether or not the item was in production for years, or was a one-year, one-hit wonder. Give those characters a pass, that kit should be available for far less money, for those patient enough to slow down, and continue their search. Art
Danno Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Marty, I can save you a whole bunch!! I have several of those RARE limited-edition Encore kits, probably 6 or 8 of 3,000. Because you are such a good friend, you can have a mint one for the bargain price of only $250. Save yourself $50! Or, you can have one for only $200 (the Encore sticker on the box is curled and discolored). Save yourself $100. Or, you can have one for only $150 (the Encore sticker on the box is hand-printed and the plastic seal looks suspiciously like saranwrap). Save 50%. Or, you can have one for only $100 (all the lights, lightbars, radios and antennae are missing, but I can sell you some great resin copies). Save a bundle. Or, I can go through my copcar salvage bin and come up with all the parts for one for only $75, including some cracked, yellowed, partially-cut-up decals. Whooo, hoo! We're really saving money now on that extremely rare kit! LOL. Seriously, everybody is right. There's nothing special about the kit; they're out of production and likely not going to be produced again; but there are tons of them out there. You should usually be able to pick one up in the $25-40 price range. I saw one at the swap meet last Saturday but didn't even pay any attention to the price on it because they are so plentiful and I already have enough for my lifetime. Take a pass on this one. My 2cents worth.
jeffb Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 ah..the "its rare so it gots to be expensive" meme.. i was at an estate sale not long ago, they had a 64 tbird promo that was heavily played with. i picked it up, saw no price tag, then put it down. the guy running the sale said "those go for 200 bucks on ebay, but i'll give it to you for 45.00" i said no thank you and started to leave. he then asks, rather snottily.."so what do YOu think it worth?" i said, "guys who collect these want them in perfect shape, this is barely a parts car. i'll give ya 5 bucks.."..he wasnt pleased. needless to say, there was no sale...
disabled modeler Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 I love the Johans and the 68 Plymouth 4door kit but I wouldn't even dream one would ever be worth that? What is this guy thinking???

My 2cents worth. Dan, your a funny guy!! LOL And I in no way was even thinking about buying that model and would only do so if the guy took one "0" off that price and then only if the shipping wasn't more then $8 to $10!! No that I know you have that many of them, I can't wait for the next meeting at your place btw did you get your email fixed?
Guest Johnny Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 I had four of the kits. 2 originals and two reissues. I bought all four for 25 bucks at a car show swap meet! The guy was unloading all his plastic cheap so he wouldn't have to haul it home again! The originals had 100 dollars on them and the reissues had 60 dollars on them. He had been trying to sell them for 2 years! I thought I had one already stashed and sold the four. The last one for 50 bucks only to discover that I no longer had one stashed so now I have none!
disabled modeler Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Hey Johnny thats a bummer! I have always liked the Johans myself and the 68 Plymouth 4door is a good kit,but do not feel too bad I haven't any ether and I'm a mid to late 60s guy.
Merkur XR4Ti Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Is there any way to easily tell from the box if it's an older issue or the reissue? I want to buy the kit but don't want to deal with the green windows.
Dave Wood Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 I have one still sealed (and 2 that are open and complete) I'll let all 3 go foe $299.00 (just kidding Gregg I don't really want to sell them)

Isn't that the truth?! Some fool has an "old toy" that looks like it spent the last decade rattling around inside a box of sandpaper, and thinks they can get a fortune for it! If I had a dime for every time this happened!
Guest Johnny Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Is this all still being fought out in court? I would live to see some of the old JoHan kits come back to life! Especially the 60's Mopars and the Pontiac, Dodge and Olds Promos! Started out on their screw on bottom cars when I was a kid! I sent off for some parts, decals and a Rambler wagon back when they had a sight selling. Never got my items from them and the sight dissappeared, but did eventualy get my money back from the Post Office as the money order was never cashed!
Ly Tran Hoang Minh Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 not sure, i thought these were pretty easy to find still. i don't think i paid alot for the one i have either. jamaican holidays porsche air conditioning compressor
