MonoPed Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Been working on this for a while, and made some more headway on it today. It's the old Monogram SSP reissue of the Mid Engine Scarab slot/curbside kit. So far, I've opened up the front wheels, and built new rear wheels using a pair of the slot car inserts and parts box rims: Fitted the dash panel from the long OOP Ricambi detail set (Thanks to Nicholas Henson!) and made a rollbar from aluminum tube: Cut out the rear of the body and made a new screen from some PE mesh and .010" sheet: Painted it Viking Blue (can also see the dummy engine insert installed): And got the stripe masked and painted this afternoon: Could have this one wrapped up in a couple days.
Crazy Ed Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Lookin' Good Brian. From the paint job I'd guess you're building the Team Meacom Foyt driven Daytona Car #35. One of these days I'm gonna find a set of those Decal sheets. Ed
Dragline Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Best looking rendition of this kit I've ever seen. Should look great finished. Bob

jedimastergary Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Looks like a nice one love the color and ho you are adding detail to it
jbwelda Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 >after seeing a few very nice buid-ups of it i think i should've grabbed one or two i will trade you one for a tamiya karmann-ghia...just the body even! great looking build there; i like the way the motor peeks out of the openings.
MonoPed Posted April 5, 2010 Author Posted April 5, 2010 great looking build there; i like the way the motor peeks out of the openings. Thanks guys! The dummy engine insert is made from resin trumpets left over from the Fisher Ferrari 512s kit and scrap plastic with the trumpets raised to the same approximate angle as the carbs in the Corvette Grand Sport kit.
torinobradley Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 I have this one in my collection but am fairly turned off by the curbside aspect. But, after seeing what can be done with them, I guess I'm gonna have to get this one across the bench. I should have some Mecom blue left over from my Grand Sport when I'm done...
MonoPed Posted April 6, 2010 Author Posted April 6, 2010 I have this one in my collection but am fairly turned off by the curbside aspect. But, after seeing what can be done with them, I guess I'm gonna have to get this one across the bench. I should have some Mecom blue left over from my Grand Sport when I'm done... I took a dim view of these simple curbsiders for a long time, then I built the old Academy Ferrari 250LM, and gained an appreciation for them. Also have the old Monogram Chaparral 2D slot/curbsider in the pile, and wouldn't mind getting the old Monogram Ferrari 275P slot/curbside kit.
dwc43 Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Also have the old Monogram Chaparral 2D slot/curbsider in the pile I have one of those too. Not a bad little car. I'm almost finished with it. IIRC it was powered by a 327. Either way, I'm doing a little extra on that car. I'm going to make a new plate where the injector stacks stick out of the back. And I'm taking a chevy engine from the old parts packs and I'm cutting it in half. You can already see an oil pan and tranny on the bottom so I'll cut the engine in half and put the injector stacks on it and the new deck plate and be done with it. That way you can actually see the engine between the wheel gaps. I may take another look at it and see if I can just remove the oil pan part from the chassis and install the complete engine. An idea to play with. I asked the question about that once and was told it's still a curb side even if I add the engine since you can't open the hood. lol
MonoPed Posted April 11, 2010 Author Posted April 11, 2010 AAAARGH!! Settled in at the bench for a decal session, and was almost done when one of the number roundels from the Ricambi sheet shattered when it hit the water and released from the paper. At some point, the sheet had been creased, but had been laying flat for so long that it didn't show up, until it got wet. Only had the two side roundels to go to finish it. So now the little Scarab is on hold indefinitely until I come up with another pair of roundels that are close enough to the ones already on it. Ain't models fun? And the needed decal:
Jairus Posted April 11, 2010 Posted April 11, 2010 Brian, you need the numbers too I take it? That type font is fairly unique. I can point you to a web site where they sell generic roundels and numbers. Maybe you can find something that will work. Although finding the exact dia is impossible that way. I would suggest you paint the roundels (mask and airbrush) and then lay decals for the numbers. Professor Motor is the place I buy all my decals. Good stuff, a little slow on shipping but reasonable prices.
MonoPed Posted April 11, 2010 Author Posted April 11, 2010 Yep, need the numbers too. All the decals were on the car except the last two roundels when it went south, so I'm not really wanting to mess with masking and painting. Good stuff at the link though, thanks!
Plankwing Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Great models, Brian. Love those Scarabs. I have the MkIV kit, haven't built it. I have two of the Strombecker Scarab MkI 24th motorized kits plus one unbuilt "pristine in the box" that I just got today, snagged it on eBay. So pristine, in fact, that none of the parts have ever been removed from the box and the decal sheet looks fairly good but obviously aged. Photo attached of the two built models. The one with the decals was gotten off eBay already built, done straight from the box, side pipes are as in the unbuilt kit I just got. I built the dark blue one about 1964, glued the top and bottom halves together and filled the seam then cut out the bottom at about where the body would meet the chassis. I don't know where the side pipes came from, nor why no decals or why the two back tires are drag slicks. Toomanyyearsheimers.
Bernard Kron Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 (edited) Nice build. I don't think Reventlow's crew ever built a bad looking car and this one's no exception. Here's a link to Patto's Place Decals: http://www.members.o...place/home.html Select the letter "S" under Decals on the left hand side of the page. Scroll down about 1/3rd of the way until you find Scarab - AJ Foyt - 1964 and select 1/24th to see a sample. It's exactly what you will need. Edited December 2, 2011 by Bernard Kron
RancheroSteve Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Brian, I have some of those decals I can send you! I built another version from that sheet. Send me your address and I'll put them in the mail for you.
MonoPed Posted December 3, 2011 Author Posted December 3, 2011 Thanks, but I finished the car some time back. Yours looks great!
RancheroSteve Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Thanks, but I finished the car some time back. Ahh, I see! I didn't look at the dates on your post. Finished pics somewhere?
surfjunke Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 WOW! Beautiful work. Nice detail & scratch work, MonoPed. Very nice paint, as well.
MonoPed Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 Pics are in the Under Glass section from last year or so.
250 Testa Rossa Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Looking for decals to build the Augie Pabst car.
