MikeMc Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 (edited) Where are the 5 oz cans going? I went by 3 advance autos and all of them had almost no colors left...they have no idea..... I suspect it is being replaced by touch up tubes. Anyone know the truth?? Edited April 10, 2010 by MikeMc
kyledr330 Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Mike, I talked to an owner of an auto parts store out near me, and he said Dupli-color is going with a bigger can than the 5oz ones.
Eshaver Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Interesting , tell us more .......................................................... Ed Shaver
RJWood Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Thanks for the info guys, I'm gonna stock up this weekend. The 5oz. cans are perfect, and if they change to a larger can it would most likely be a 12oz. and will probably be 3-4 dollars more.
AzTom Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 I just picked up a few of the large cans, 11oz. at Checker Auto. They still had a full rack of the small cans but the large was $4.49 and the small cans were like $3.79? I bought the big ones, never have too much paint. AzTom
MikeMc Posted April 9, 2010 Author Posted April 9, 2010 Yup they did that here...6.95/8.95 Kleer effex 12.95 biggest loss was colors..couple of blues, reds silver, black and white........I don't use many of those except black, white for base....I use clear and flake for metallics and pearls...so I can't find all the usual colors..."Dusty Rose"....."Cinnimon Glow"........
Jared Roach Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 Same with me, all my local parts stores have the new cans, and I accually don't like it, wish they still had the 5oz. around here, or I would of stocked up. ! week they're there, next week they'e not
charlie8575 Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 When it was first posted that Advance was offering massive discounts on Dupli-Color, I went to two, and found they had either returned or sold almost everything. I eventually settled on a light blue for my GTO. As to the narrower selection of paint colors, it's simply reflective of the fewer choices in colors available in recent model years. Up until about fifteen years ago, you used to be able to order a whole rainbow of colors and combinations, but not anymore, now all we have is bland, ugly, or colors that are actually hard to classify as to exactly what they are. Auto Zone still has a good selection of the 5-oz. cans, and I plan on buying a few. You might also want to try Plasti-Kote, as they keep a pretty good selection for older cars, too. Charlie Larkin
mikemodeler Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 I would think the real reason the varied colors are being eliminated and replaced by the general colors has to do with sales. If the smaller cans are not selling and the larger ones will, along with less shelf space required to stock fewer skus, then it makes sense to stock the larger cans. Spray paint is no different than any other item on the shelf in a retail environment-stock what sells! Most NAPA stores (and probably Carquest) can order a can of Dupli-color spray paint in the smaller factory color cans. All you have to do is ask them to, they usually have it in stock at the NAPA warehouse so it is only a day or two away. Also keep in mind that not as many folks touch up their cars anymore since the clear coat finishes became the norm, something about the extra steps seems to scare most of them. There could also be the issue of shoplifting, local ordinances banning spray paint, changes in company policy, etc that has caused the stores to reduce or eliminate the paint. Wal-mart used to have a big selection and now they have almost nothing.
shucky Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Guys, I contacted Dupli Color for the real reason ... ==quote== We've come out with a new touch-up product that will be replacing the current 5 oz and 11 oz aerosols we have. The new product (called Perfect Match) will have a different numbering system and will be available in one size, an 8 oz aerosol can. Thank you again for your inquiry. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Sincerely, Eric Dupli-Color Product Support ==end quote==
MikeMc Posted April 13, 2010 Author Posted April 13, 2010 (edited) Hey thanks a lot for the poop Dilla...I was hoping that was not the story...oh well progress!! Edited April 13, 2010 by MikeMc
Casey Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 If there's a specific color (or Dupli-Color #) you're looking for, try searching online for it. I was able to track down and order a 1988 Nissan color that DC had long discontinued, but my local Bumper To Bumper had one in a warehouse and got it for me.
Nick Winter Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 it's true my local Canadian Tire has nothing but the new larger can's, so it went from costing me $9.99 for the can to paint my Bulitt Mustang to $12.99, which I wasn't pleased with, because well let's face it I'll never use that color again.

I understand what you're saying when it's a one time use, But the paint is cheaper per once in the new 8oz cans. That's cool. I have not seen the new 8oz here yet, only the 5oz and 11 oz. AzTom

lordairgtar Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 I was at Autozone looking for paint and noticed the small amount of what they had and the counter monkey told me that AZ was switching over to Rust-Oleum because corporate was having complaints about the nozzles not working in the brand of paint they had (Plasti-cote). Rust-Oleum has only limited basic colors and is useless for duplicating actual car colors. They never figured out that people just don't properly care for the nozzles and never clean them after use.
charlie8575 Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 While I was on my way home from the dentist, I found Benny's, a local discounter, had substantial mark-down on Dupli-Color, so I bought a can of T150 truck paint, which is GM Dark Blue metallic, and is very, very close for many years of GM, and some Chrysler dark blues from the 60s-early 90s. Big can, but plenty of use in it. Charlie Larkin
