I have been looking for hemi orange paint for a 69 superbird that I am building. The only way I have found it is in a spray can. Because of how I tend to spray things, I would rather shoot it through my airbrush. To me, I dont care whether it is enamel, laquer, or acrylic. Does anyone know where I can find hemi orange paint in anything other than a rattlecan?

I think you may have to result to the rattlecan for this, Ben, short of going to a place that custom mixes auto paints. I painted this 09 Challeneger with Testors Custom Lacquer System Hemi Orange, and from a spray can, it turned out nicely.

Just decant the spray paint and use it in your airbrush. Ha, that's something that I have not heard mentioned on this site in a long time.

Are you looking for the Hemi Orange engine paint or the Hemi orange body color used in 70/71? I think is was Tor-Red? for Plymouth.

The engine paint is more orange looking. I used Testors Boyds Sunburst, not sure how accurate but it looked great.

Tor Red is not Hemi orange it is very much red. It was the factory color on my 70 Road Runner. Hemi orange is the same color no matter what make it was on. There are also two shades for engines. The 12.5 solid cam Hemi's used Race Hemi Orange and the 10.5 hydro cam Hemi's used Street Hemi Orange which is a lighter shade of the race version.

The General Lee is painted Hemi Orange in the first few seasons and is a lighter color than the GM Huger Orange that was used in later shows just to give you an example of what to look for.

How in the world do I do that?! I have only been using my airbrush for a few weeks. Before I got it, I used rattle cans exclusively. How do I get the paint from the rattle can to the airbrush container? This is probably a monumentally stupid question, but I'm very new to the hobby.

Not hard at all. You can search on here and find many topics on here. It used to get mentioned quite a lot, but not recently. Anyways, best way to decant it is to get some modelers putty, or stuff they use in fake flower arrangements, and use it to hold a plastic straw onto the can nozzle and just spray it into a bottle. Only use what you need and leave the rest in the can.

This is another one I found with a quick search that might help, but there are better threads on the subject if you have time to hunt for them. Look under the tips and tricks section when you search.

Actually Dodge Hemi Orange and Plymouth Tor Red are the same paint codes, V2. The Orange you may be thinking of is Orange Code 999, looks like the Duke's car.

Tor-Red and Street Hemi Orange ARE NOT the same color....period. Tor-Red would be more in line with Race Hemi Orange, but even then it would be a far stretch of the imagination. Hemi Orange and Vitamin-C are a lot closer together than Tor-Red and Street Hemi Orange are. I have several cans of Mopar Street Hemi and Race Hemi orange in my stash of paints (as my screen name tells you, I am a Hemi guy first.......I just play with Fox Mustangs now as well), plus the Turquoise and old FireDome Hemi/Poly reds and Golds. Plus, if I am feeling frisky, I can board one of my jets back to dads place and have 2 original HemiCars to use for reference.

I did NOT say Tor-Red and Street Hemi Orange were the same. I said that Hemi Orange and Tor red, as body colors were the same. Hemi engine orange is not the same as Hemi orange body color. That's why I posted the first question to hellonwheels, Was he looking for the Hemi Orange body color or the engine color?

Perhaps my point got lost as well (or clouded, as I do refer to Street Hemi Orange a bit) there AzTom........my point was that the 'Hemi Orange' color placed on the automobile and 'Tor-Red' are no wheres near the same color. My point was that given the hue of 'Race Hemi Orange' is quite a bit more red than 'Street Hemi Orange' that it could be vaguely confused. Now, the engine color 'Street Hemi Orange' is a LOT closer to body color 'Hemi Orange' than 'Tor-Red' is and could be used in a pinch.

If you want the real deal go to the source.....most of the full size automotive paint suppliers can hook you up with a quart of the "correct" paint code for a specific year or model vehicle. Use care though and do a test piece...some automotive paints are "hot" and will destroy your plastic model.

This is my 1970 Plymouth Road Runner in Tor Red. As you can see, it's not close to either Hemi Orange colors. It's very much red in color.

That's what I did for this Daytona.......................

I went to the local paint jobber and had them mix it for me.............no muss no fuss, and the color's exactly right! ;)

BTW, MCW sells Hemi Orange paint, but IMO it's a litte too "metallic". Hemi Orange body paint had a very subtle gold metallic flake in it.

Okay, I'm not a paint expert. I remember some of this from getting paint for some mopar builds. Speaking only about body colors, if the Hemi Orange and Tor Red used in the early 70's are different, how can they have the same paint code? I have a Tor Red model but not a Hemi Orange one so I can't compare.

This is why I'm a Ford guy. ;)

Hemi Orange and Tor-Red are both EV2 and are the exact same color. Plymouth and Dodge used different names for marketing and advertising reasons, but the color is the same for both. One source of info: http://www.highimpactperformance.org/
