Gregg Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 As the title says, use this thread for posting ideas, in a logical order, for the threads/categories/topics you would like to see added/changed. Thanks. Keep it simple, and don't quote replies. Just give your two cents.
diymirage Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 i would like to see a clear division in trucks ranging in size from pickup (including caminos and racheros) to small commercial (maybe duallies) up to large comercial (petes and the such) also, if we could seperate the tutorial into a single closed section where one can submit a tutorial to one of the mod who then place the toturial and lock it so that it doesnt get spammed thats my 2 cents
Terror Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 All the sections are fine.Just add workbench and underglass in each section.Simple..

Gregg Posted May 2, 2010 Author Posted May 2, 2010 A hot rod/street rod category. Each Category having their own On the Bench section and under glass section would be nice too. Donnie, I do like this idea. I know, I'm not supposed to quote, but I'm da boss, right?
Guest 85Biarittz Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 (edited) I have to almost go along with Harry's except add a "On the workbench" to each. Edited May 2, 2010 by 85Biarittz
sjordan2 Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 (edited) Thank you Gregg, this is a great subject. I think much of the success of this will have to do with the right description on the categories. One mistake that I think scaleauotmag.com makes, for example, is in their category, "Racecars and sports cars." This lumps together everything from a Willys Gasser to Gille Villeneuve's Formula 1 car, plus stock Ferraris and Porsches that should be entered under "Factory Stock." I submit the following topics for consideration for adding to the forum... • Rods & Customs – cars & trucks • Add Funny Cars to Drag, and others of this ilk (I don't know how many classes to add here) • Trucks, from pickups to big rigs • Pre-1960 classics • Stock production road car builds (I don't mean just OOB) • There needs to be some sort of description for major Euro-style racing, such as Open Wheel (Formula 1, IRL), LeMans, etc. EDIT: Wow, just since I started typing this there have been a bunch of great suggestions. Harry P. Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 I have to almost go along with Harry's except add a "On the workbench" to each. The real trick is how to break down things into enough categories so that there's a place for everything, and everything in its place... but not so many categories that it gets cumbersome. I think I've come up with a good balance of categories without breaking things down too far (red cars, cars with fins, cars from the 20's, etc.) Too many separate categories gets a little silly. The "Showcase" category under Cars and Trucks would obviously be for finished models, while anything else, including WIPs, would go into its specific subject category. No need for a separate "On the Workbench" type breakdown.
camaroman Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 (edited) I like Harry's idea as well, but I do have a question. Will these still have a Under Construction folder. I think we call it "on the workbench" now. That is one of my favorite sections of the site. I would not mind everything being included. The title of the post usually tells me whether or not I want to open it. It is really helpful if the poster takes time to make the title relevant Sorry I stopped in mid-post. Did not mean to be redundant. Edited May 2, 2010 by camaroman
GrandpaMcGurk Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 (edited) Gregg, an easy to use scale calculator...you know the kind, the user plugs in one scale size or another and the calculator spits out the desired size in inches or mm. This is be something I've found very useful especially when scratch building & kit bashing. As long as you are considering a bit of expansion could you possibly allocate a little more real estate to large scale? Perhaps under the Big Boyz section add subtitles for 1/16th, 1/12th, 1/8th, 1/6th & larger. As is......1/8th posts get bumped by 1/16 etc. so on & so on. If nothing else perhaps a section just for 1/8th and larger. Thanks for listening. Edited May 2, 2010 by GrandpaMcGurk

It is really helpful if the poster takes time to make the title relevant Sorry I stopped in mid-post. Did not mean to be redundant. It would be a huge help if people always used descriptive titles. For example, if in the Competition-NASCAR/Circle Track/Road Course, etc. category someone posted "Bobby Unser '68 Indy car WIP"... if people could be specific like that in their titles... it would make things easier, and also we wouldn't need a ton of separate categories, because the topic titles themselves would be what "categorizes" posts within a forum section.
Nick Winter Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Hey hope this dosen't piss anyone off but, what's wrong with the way it is now, if you do implement it like this it'll take me 2 hours to see what everyone's working on, right now it's just under 35 minutes. Besides I build pretty well exclusively, Trucks and Firebirds, with a odd-ball thrown in, like a Movie or TV car, And i have no problems right now posting my builds, well other than I don't have a camera.

Because it's not only about what works best for you... it's about what works best for everyone. And if we can come up with a site that makes logical sense and works pretty well for most people, that's what we'll do... even if it means some people will have to get used to a new layout.

AzTom Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Any chance for a Modified diecast section? It is now at many of the model contests. AzTom
Harry P. Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Any chance for a Modified diecast section? It is now at many of the model contests. AzTom My opinion: A modified diecast is a model car, no special category needed. People modify diecasts, they modify resin, they modify styrene... they're all model cars in my book, doesn't matter what the material is that's been modified. I'd rather see categories based on subject matter than based on the materials used. Don't want to fall into the "too many categories" trap.
SSNJim Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 I like the new Trucks section. Now if you created a Racing Section at the same level as Trucks, and had four subforums - Circle, Road, Off-Road and Drag - life would be good. I agree that all these sections should be used as the On The Workbench/General Discussion threads for that type, and the Under Glass section for all finished models, whether Smart Car or Kenworth. Of course, informative thread titles would help.
Danno Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 So, Harry ... I'm trying to understand so I don't get in trouble ... T bucket rods with pickup beds and no commercial purpose go into 'pickup trucks,' No verdict yet on El Caminos/Rancheros, What about Utes? Craftsman Truck Series competition vehicles cannot be posted anywhere, And commercial non-truck vehicles cannot be posted ... eh? Where do we post our non-commercial heavy non-truck vehicles? What if my modified die-cast non-commercial 1/8 scale USAC El Camino is a work-in-progress? Where should it be posted? Yikes! {No malice intended; Just warming up the chain-jerk muscles for a lot of future work-outs. LOL}
Harry P. Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Harry, I'm getting fed up with people, your not picking on me or anything but, I'm just tired of bull ###### like his, you could probley understand were I'm coming from, Johnny first, MikeMC next and a hundred thousand others just waiting. I had a great weekend hunting, golfing and 4 wheeling to come home to this, I'm tired and pissed off. Forgot to mention what I was getting at a PM is useless. You have to understand that whatever personal problems you have going on are just that–your own personal problems... they don't belong here. We all have stuff that aggravates us. Believe me, I have three kids, I could write a book on being aggravated! But I don't post that stuff here.
Danno Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 By the way, Nick. I'm not piling on, but it is at all possible for you to post anything without profanity in it? I don't know/care where you grew up, or how you were raised, but crude terminology for 'being upset' does or should count as off-limits. Not to mention your thinly-veiled references to prohibited words. (Four pound signs don't spell anything legitimate.) It certainly offends me, if no one else. Gregg has warned many, many times that such language won't be tolerated on his board.
Tony T Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 To get back to the original question, I like Harry's suggestions, except to expand the Model Trucks a couple of categories, namely Competition and Stock/Show/Custom or something similar to the cars for non-commercial trucks.
crispy Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 I think Harry has it down. It's a nice compromise without too much. As he said it would be more cumbersome if you were to add a section for each individual genre. Chris

highway Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 I also like Harry's ideas, with one or two additions. I've seen it mentioned in the thread about what things other than cars do you build, someone metioned a new section for "Other Models". Yes, I do realize the name of the magazine is "Model Cars Magazine", but there were many nice models pictured in that thread, including from Harry! The other, and I can't remember what thread I mentioned it in to you, Gregg, but is a separate catagory for all Community Build Projects.
