Greg Myers Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Sometimes I find myself thinking about the good and bad of old kits, maybe just fond memories? I always liked the beautiful engines in the Jo-Han Comet / Maverick, and was wondering how it could have such a great engine and the rest of the kit so blah ?
Junkman Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Yep, that's another one of those jo-hanisms. No other model company outside Japan managed to combine utter brilliance and total rubbish this seamless.
Chuck Most Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 (edited) I liked the Shotgun mill so much, I decided to save it for something a bit better. But all was not lost, I figured I could stab a 5.0L into the car and make a decent little curbside pro tourer! Oh, and Christian, you perfectly nailed the Jo-Han kit engineering philosophy! iBorg Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 This is one of those cars that I keep on hoping that either Round 2 or Revell re-issues. Maybe they could take the best of the Jo-han kit (body and engine) and scan it for reproduction and create a new interior and chassis. I do know that Oakey Spaulding, the current caretaker of the Jo-han brand will never reissue the Maverick. This is due to a combination of mold damage and/or missing molds as well as licensing fees. Now if I could only find a grill for the Maverick, I have one I could restore. Mike
Chuck Most Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 (edited) Jo-Han did basically the same thing on the '70 Olds 442 kit. The engine is great- easily up to today's standards, even, but totally dropped the ball on the chassis and interior. At least they got the bodies done right. Well... usually. Mike- I think Testors reissued either the Comet or Maverick a few years back. It was in their catalog, but I've never seen one 'out in the wild'. Edited July 24, 2010 by Chuck Most
route66modeler Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 HI, Yet another subject for the new cartaker of the amt/mpc molds to do. A "new" maverick would be great. Still can't figure out why they are doing a Nascar COT car. Doesn't he know revell dropped all their nascar kits due the very high fees demanded by Nascar. Go figure. Steve

Steve That is funny, now that you mention it. Then again, it seems Revell can't put sidewall lettering on their tires to save their lives nowadays because of licensing litigation, but AMT can pull it off. I still think Round 2 must have a sharper legal department than does Revell!

Hi Chuck, Please post more photos of your maverick. It looks great. Steve

Hi, Johans were my favorite kits to build as a kit(with all their problems lol). I built the models that came with metal axles so I could play with the car after I was done. I hated the old revell kits with the tiny metal pins and steerable wheels. Couldn't roll those cars arround. Steve

route66modeler Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 Perry's resin does a whole variety of Maverick resin bodies and transkits and there is a Brazilian company offering one in resin as well. the engine in the pro stock kits were quite nice but the chassis was pretty lame. would a modern tooling Maverick kit sell well? hard to say, a Grabber version could be maybe. Dave HI Dave, Well, when you see what the last issues of the joham prostock kits selling in the $50.00+ range and the two in one stock/funny car maverick kits selling for $100.00+ range. I think a retool with a stock and funny car/prostock version would sell very well. Steve

Now I wish I had all those great kits back!!!
cruz Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 I have been playing around with one of these for a while trying to combine these 2 kits together, I think that with a bit of work it should work...... Norm Veber, from Replicas and Miniatures Company of Maryland has that engine in resin with some additional parts also, at least, when I decide to do this, that's what I will be purchasing from him!!

Now that looks like a cool "Comet" project!I have the dealer promos of both the Maverick and the Comet,in both of those alone,I have invested $300,I would love to see either of them made now,The Maverick Grabber,Or the Comet GT!
Chuck Most Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Bandit Resins does a flat hood for the Maverick, which is what I'll be using on mine when/if I ever finish it!
