brett Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 A bit over 200, but every one is brought with a specific car in mind to try and replicate. I too am a firm beleiver in they were made to be built, otherwise they are assorted bits of plastic dumped in a box
Junkman Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Ive been building for close to 38 years and I have less than 30 models unbuilt most are parts kits, a few are in-line for building and those that I dont have plans for I will sell or give away. You see im a builder not a collector, I believe an unbuilt model is just a box of plastic collecting dust. The real value is in the creation of the art that comes from those plastic parts. So I dont collect a bunch of models just to say "oh I have that one" no when I want it I'll find it somewhere then it will get built, I dont care how old or rare it is,if i buy it im building it! So you think I should bring about 800 kits back into circulation?
RodneyBad Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 I'm no Hoarder, just a really slow builder. But I'm one of those guys you would ask for those long lost kits (or parts) your looking for you wished you bought and would Gladly trade with you. I'm not a Hoarder, but a really slow builder go ahead and think about that... I'll wait..
highway Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 But I'm one of those guys you would ask for those long lost kits (or parts) your looking for you wished you bought and would Gladly trade with you. I'm a perfect example of that, Rodney had parts I needed!
highway Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 I'm no Hoarder, just a really slow builder. That's my excuse, well, that and I'm stocking up for 2012!!
Dan Helferich Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 I have 3000+ unbuilt car kits. My excuses are: 1) I used to sell at toy shows (The DAAM Shows near Detroit.) 2) I worked part time at a hobby shop for 8 1/2 years where I could by everything at 10% over cost. 3)Some of my buddies have more than me so I think some sort of contagion might be at work here. 4) I love model cars!
Guest Johnny Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 See there in lays the problem! I have a hard enough time picking out a new kit at the Hobby Shop especially if they have a big selection! Now to have that many unbuilts on a shelf in eyesight just makes it imposible to decide which one to build! I would be there looking at them for weeks on end trying to decide!
Bruno Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Is it a bad thing when you can't count that high and know you will never build them all and you refused to let any go hoping for a drug to extend you life 100-150 years LOL. This doesn't include my rebuilders and projects Do I see 8 MPC '70 Cuda kits and 11 '71 Demon kits?
Junkman Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Do I see 8 MPC '70 Cuda kits and 11 '71 Demon kits? I asked myself the same question. The answer is yes. I checked it repeatedly.
highway Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 2) I worked part time at a hobby shop for 8 1/2 years where I could by everything at 10% over cost. First, no wonder my better half doesn't want me to find a job at a hobby shop! Second, no wonder I couldn't find an Ala Kart for a friend I used to work with, you bought them all!!
Semi Trailer Mechanic Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 The collection has grown slightly since these were taken.
Greg Myers Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 (edited) I've learned a few things from this thread, or maybe I have a few questions: 1) It's a bad thing to have too many kits ? I.E. "I'm a builder, not a collector." 2) Some people have more kits than me. See Honey I'm not the only one. 3) WOW! A dedicated room with nothing but kits floor to ceiling. I've got kit's stashed all over the house. 4) I think I know why so many of us has so many kits, at least I've figured out how I got in that situation. Being a long time builder (OK, collector, for some of you), I found myself missing kits that I like. What happened was the "I'll get it later" syndrome. You know, "It'll be there when I want it." Then you go to the hobby shop and, "No. We haven't had That kit for months." So what happens? You buy it, stock up, you never know if they'll stop making it,(how many good kits have manufactures butchered to make make some trendy kit ruining the original?). Edited August 2, 2010 by Greg Myers

I moved to Florida from Michigan in 2006. Before I moved, I kept thinking about getting back into model building. I have a 'few' kits and my mom's house (I hope they are still there ) such as the Monogram '59 Eldorado and a few others. But they were bought with this mind set. There when I want them. I hope mom didn't pitch them.
bigmikevee Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Hey gang, I have my 90+ cars in closets, I intend on building every kit that I have as my skills increase, as well as keep my eye out for cool, affordable bargains along the way. The reason I have so many is, after long time away from the hobby, when I went to build what I really like (everything Mopar, altereds, rails, gassers, funny cars, 60's & 70's muscle cars) and remember from before, I realized that many are expensive and hard to find, if not out of reach altogether. When I find what I like, I grab it, not to collect, but to build. Hopefully I will build well into the future, and want to build what I love and enjoy, not whatever I can find or what is today's moneymaker for the manufacturer. We are all, no matter our skill level or ability, blessed to have something we are so passionate about, can share with our new online friends on the forum, and create something permanent we can retain as long as we want. In this day and age of disposable garbage, to me, even the worst glue bomb says someone took the time to sit down and...do something....even if they did a horrible job, they sat down...and did something. That's cool. Mike
Guest Johnny Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 SCOTT!!! That isn't a noose hanging there in the first picture is it???
Scott Colmer Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 (edited) It is always fun to peek at other guy's stashes. Ratnasty's has to be the best on this thread. Lots of great kits VERY well displayed. I had 500 about 2 years ago. I haven't sold any, but I did acquire a few more. To be honest, I have most everything I want. I still buy a cool reissue here and there. Right now that are all packed in boxes waiting for the new house to become available mid september. I'll count them when I unpack. So am I the only one that will grab a stack of unbuilt but open kits and look through them while watching racing on TV? It just feels good. Scott Word of warning - Watch where you store them. The back of one of my cabinets was wet and became an entry way for termites. They like the boxes but they LOVE decals. Hosted on Fotki Edited August 3, 2010 by Scott Colmer
