Poncho-Power Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 nice work on the unit heater, i have been looking for some type of furnace to add to my dio, i am going to start scratch building it one day
dannyi Posted October 8, 2010 Author Posted October 8, 2010 thanks gent's! ...hope to be back at this soon now that the moving is almost complete! I miss my work bench!!
Greg Cullinan Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Why does life have to interrupt such exciting builds , I'd love to see more of this.
decsgarages Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 GOOD WORK BUDDY....VERY NICE BRICKWORK....WELL DETAILED....
dannyi Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 Thanks Greg and decsgarages, it's a bummer when life sneaks in and interrupts things for sure but we're getting settled in now and I hope to get back in the grove here soon. Decsgarages, we just got back from your neck of the woods this past Saturday. My daughter got married in Galway. We stayed in some really nice cottage's just outside of Oughterard. First time in Ireland and loved it! Didn't get as much play time as I'd hoped, and was unable to make it to Dublin, but look forward to it next time I'm there.
EH225M Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Hey Danny, That's an awesome dio!. It looks so real in the pics untill you realise the background is your workbench!! You've got a lot of talent inside you. And you went to Galway? Lucky bugger! My ancestors came from there - and I'd love to see the place for myself, but it's a long walk - and swim!! Nice work, you make it real. James.
Hattley Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 I've been following this for a while now. Great work and thanks for the tips!
whale392 Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Excellent build. Given your detailing style and companies/products used, I am going to venture a guess and say you also do/did model railroading at some point in time?
dannyi Posted November 7, 2010 Author Posted November 7, 2010 ..thnaks James, I hope someday you get to go to Galway, it was a great experience, and for you it would be even more so I'm sure. ...thanks Mark, I can't wait to get back into to this again! ...thanks Bradley, your guess was correct. I built model cars till I got to high school, then I turned my interests to more important issues like girls and muscle cars. After I got married I started into model railroading, did that for about 10 years or so. Every now and then I get the urge to break out the RR stuff but don't, having too much fun with this again!..lol
GTMust Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 You dio was another inspiration to get me started on mine, especially when I saw your brickwork and weathering techniques. Keep it coming.... I love what you're doing (and it's great for stealing ideas!)
dannyi Posted December 17, 2010 Author Posted December 17, 2010 Thanks Erik and Tony, Hoping to get back to this after the holidays. Between the resin work and other projects I haven't found the time for it. Sad thing is I've been saying "after this" and "after that" for three months now!
Danno Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 Outstanding dio work! Looking forward to seeing more as it develops. Thanks for coming on board and showing it to us.
dannyi Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 ..got a small up date....because I wasn't able to find the light shades I wanted, decided to make my own. ..it's a scale 16" industrial light shade used a lot in factories and warehouses. It's based on the popular Ivanhoe shades of the day. Since I need between 9 and 12 of these, I'm making a mold for it. Once the lighting is figured out I can get the ceiling and upper floor done.
GTMust Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 These are great. I assume you turned them on a lathe? If you decide to resin cast them, count me in for a few. Tony
dannyi Posted January 7, 2011 Author Posted January 7, 2011 Thanks Tony, yes I did turn it on a lathe. Just got it about 3 weeks ago. Best tool investment I ever made. If I can get a good mold of this I will add it to my product line. Let ya know when I get it done.
Dr. Cranky Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Love the way this one is turning out. More, please, more in 2011!
Model Junkyard Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 This is a freaking amazing job! Just great! Love it!
dannyi Posted January 9, 2011 Author Posted January 9, 2011 ..thanks Virgil and Seb, I'm hoping that once I get some made it'll give me some incentive to get back after this this!
dannyi Posted January 23, 2011 Author Posted January 23, 2011 ...well I finally got the molds made and so far so good on the copies. Plan is to wire up a couple and see how they look, then decide on how many to use. Once these are in place I can start on the ceiling joists and upper flooring. These light shades have inspired me to get back at this.....
Slowpoke Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Dannyl, I'm new here on this forum but I have to say, after looking at your work, especially the brickwork, I am TOTALLY impressed. Do you use a Sherline? Or which brand? I ask only because your light shades seem like you started with a big workpiece... Carry on!
dannyi Posted January 23, 2011 Author Posted January 23, 2011 ...thanks Roger, I have Taig lathe and I'm very happy with it. I'm still working with it and have a lot to learn. It's one of the best tool investments I've ever made. ..the work piece I used for the lamps is a 3/4" resin plug or round stock I guess you'd call it. I made a mold of different size wood dowels and make these plugs as I need them. A 3/4" dowel is about 18"s in 1/25 scale. After some research on the light shades it looks like the 16" was the most common, so that's the size of the ones I made.
