Last night I was watching the new CMT Films Petty Blue DVD that they just release. It got me to thinking about the Barracuda that Richard Petty drove in 65 when Nascar banned the Hemi eninge in the intermediate cars. I dug out my resin kit from Model Car World and am thinking about starting this as my next project.

Would anybody have any reference pics of this car? I have been looking for more pics, I have a few but, would love to have more. I have seen were some recreated this special car but from what I can tell, it is not 100% accurate. Any help would be truely appreciated. Thanks.

Heres the car.

Thanks Dave. There were 2 cars built by the Petty's. The first was wrecked killing an 8 yr old boy in Texas (?) so the Petty's had to build another one to fullfill contracts with the drag strips.

Mark is correct on the location of "the crash".

Little boy died, a few others injured. Dallas, Georgia.

I have this magazine with a feature on the car.

Will try to locate it & post something.

Jason,

Here's the one and only pic I have of Andy "Moose" Kallen's build of the Petty 43-Jr drag racing Barracuda. Andy was a fanatic fan of The King, and he meticulously researched every model he built of a Petty car (or so he told me, anyway, and we all know Moose would never blow smoke! LOL).

I took a couple of other photos of Andy's build when it was fresh, and they appeared in one of the magazines prior to his death. As I recall, it was a double feature with Andy's model and another one by Bill Coulter ~~~ but I could certainly be wrong.

Don't know if this helps any, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

again i could be wrong, was wrong about where the crash happened but i'm pretty sure that both cars built had altered wheelbases. it's possible that the first car was originally built on a stock Barracuda wheelbase and later changed? reference pics i have show the cross rammed version to have the rear wheel openings stretched and the axle forward of the stock location.

the HAMB thread shows a picture of the "wrecked" car body after it was supposedly dug up on the Petty property. someone who posted in that thread claims that the second car was sold to another racer.

Dave

I saw "one" of the Petty Cudas at Rockingham (NC) in about 1971. It was still Petty blue.

DZ...... You're welcome.

This version (when I saw it in '71) was running B/A(altered) with fuel injection.

Had no name on the car then, still Petty blue.

The one here has carburetors.

Here's the SS&DI mag with article.

Unfortunately, it wasn't finished in time and Petty rushed to build the 'Cuda.
