ScrappyJ Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 Okay...before I send this freaking computer sailing through the air, I need some help! My laptop died on me and I had to get a new one. Problem is that it has Windows 7, which I don't think I'm going to like. I have loaded my pics. onto the new laptop, but don't see where I can publish them to the web. I then tried searching to see if I could find tips on the web, but didn't see any good tips (at least any that I understood). Does anyone have this same problem? How do I get my pics off of my computer into Fotki with Windows 7? Help, please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Foxer Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) Your problem has nothing to do with Windows 7 ..nothing has changed there since windows 95. If you have a Fotki account already, nothing has changed there either. I'm not sure where you problem is at. Win 7 has changed the names of certain folders ... notable the Used folder where it will, by default, stuff your photos. Instead of in the "Documents and Settings" folder it now uses a "User" folder for your default locations to "lose" your files. The old folders ARE there, but they are unusable. I'm just taking a wild guess here, so tell us more if that's not the problem. Win 7 CAN be frustrating until until you catch up with how they have renamed things. Edited October 6, 2010 by Foxer
ScrappyJ Posted October 7, 2010 Author Posted October 7, 2010 (edited) The pics are there and as you've said, they aren't under "My Documents" anymore, they are under a seperate "My Pictures" folder. However, where as before I would highlight my pics and there was an option in the left margin to upload to the web, that is no longer there. If I do highlight a pic, there does not appear to be an option to "publish to the web". Edited October 7, 2010 by ScrappyJ
MikeMc Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 (edited) Dirk, were you using Vista before ? Edited October 7, 2010 by MikeMc
ScrappyJ Posted October 7, 2010 Author Posted October 7, 2010 Dirk, were you using Vista before ? Nope. I was using XP. I did down load Live Photo Gallery today, but there are only a few sites that it allows you to share with (YouTube, Face Book), but no Fotki. I'm still playing around with it, but would rather be building or something, rather than to be trying to figure out something that was more second nature.
Zoom Zoom Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 This is how I've always done it Dirk, Go to the album you want to add pics to in Fotki. Klik on the "add photos" at the main page of the album folder. It's in the line of options to the right of the pic that's displaying. Thia opens the window "add/upload files to album" and I klik on "Fotli ActiveX uploader" That'll open and you can just select the file in your computer in the box on the left. That will display the pics in the middle box for you to klik on to select. When you have selected all the pics you want to add to the album you klik on the "start upload" button on the right of your screen. That's all I've ever done. always works fine. Unless they changed something, the ActiveX uploader doesn't work with Firefox, which at first was quite annoying, requiring a 3rd party uploader to upload large batches of photos. Fotki finally developed their own "Fotki Uploader" which is installed on your desktop and works quite seamlessly. You don't have to have your browser open, you open your folder w/the photos, select the ones to upload, right click and the standard menu appears with a prompt "Upload to Fotki", then follow the easy instructions (log in, choose the section to upload, name the album if it's a new one or choose an existing album from the list to add to). It uploads the photos in the background. What I generally do is to start the photos uploading from the desktop, then go to the album and set it all up as they're uploading in the background. Took me a little while to acclimate, but now I prefer this over the old ActiveX uploader.
ScrappyJ Posted October 8, 2010 Author Posted October 8, 2010 Thanks for the help, Gents! It was just a different way of uploading and I had never tried the way Steve mentioned, I always pushed/published the pics from my computer to Fotki. Mike Lawrence mentioned uploading Firefox as a browser, but more importantly, he got me to download Java in Fotki to send the pictures to the computer. This got me going, as again, I had not tried this way before. It was a little different with downloading multiple pictures, but worked with it best I could. The other thing is that it appeared to be much slower than what I was used to. What Bob mentioned is what I stumbled onto lastnight, prior to seeing his response. I downloaded the "Fotki Uploader" and was able to higlight the pictures off of my computer, right-click, click on "Send to" and there the Fotki Icon was to upload. Again, thanks for all the tips and help!
Zoom Zoom Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Who said anything about firefox Bob? He said it was a new computer running W7, that would mean it's using IE8 [which kicks firefox's --- in my opinion.[i did have it on my old computer] unless someone went to the trouble of switching it over I assume. Anyway, I'm shure one or the other of out suggestions will work for him and that's the main thing. I was trying to be helpful, that's all, based solely on my experience w/Fotki and their ActiveX uploader, and offered an alternative (to anyone that reads this thread) that will work regardless of OS and browser. If you assumed that my quoting you was at your expense, I'm sorry, that was completely unintentional. I was only trying to help others with the subject at hand since I formerly used Fotki's ActiveX (which I loved), but that option went away when I switched browsers.
SoCalCarCulture Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Of course using FTP is at least twice as fast for uploading to Fotki and works with any OS.
